Doc & I don't agree

Saturday, November 05, 2011

Well, I talked to the Dr's office again yesterday. They wanted to let me know that my Dr has acknowledged my desire to not start on statin medication. He wants it documented that he disagrees and now that I am off triglyceride med that if I don't take the cholesterol meds (statins) I will see the triglycerides rise and have too high cholesterol.

All I am asking is to give me another 3 months opportunity to continue turning my numbers around. I will admit defeat if it can't be done by exercise and diet alone, however, I don't want to throw in the towel in the first round.

1.5 years ago I did not have high cholesterol, high triglycerides or diabetes. However, I did not continue on a healthy lifestyle path and I spiraled down to the point where I was this past August.

I am feeling very uncomfortable with my decision to disagree with my Dr. but I feel I know my body better that he does. I understand that from his point of view, as a medical professional, he has to advise me based on his knowledge and experience. I am not saying I will not ever go on the meds he wants, I just want to give it a try my way.

I guess I am looking for comments from everyone. Do you think I'm wrong?

I think you are on the right track! The only thing you might be doing wrong (and this is only my humble opinion) is to continue seeing a doctor who would bully you about taking medication with such serious side effects when you are obviously taking strides to correct the problem on your own. I say YOU GO GIRL ... keep up the hard work and see where it gets you.

I think you're making a wise decision. You've given yourself a goal with a time limit. Doctors can only know what we tell them when we see them - they don't see your day to day work.

We all should know and listen to our bodies. YOU and only YOU know what you can commit to as far as a healthy lifestyle goes. Take the 3 mo. and see how it goes, track so you have a record to look at so you know the whys and wherefours.

I don't think you're wrong with making the decision you did. Truly you are the one in charge o your body! We all are! My Dr. several years ago wanted me to go on cholesterol med. and I told him that I didn't want to because my HDL is very high. I also don't like having more meds. to take. I'm already on so many! My husband's on Pravastatin it's coming down little by little. His Dr. told him to take fish oil supplements because that can help. Also, he knows that when he was running and cutting out simple carbs, that's when his numbers were pretty much perfect! So, you know what to do to help yourself, so that should really be the answer. Good luck to you!
