Breakfast, Steel Cut Oats, Dr. Oz, Oh, My!

I knew I was on to something when I started eating steel cut oats for breakfast (thanks to SPARK members for sharing that suggestion!), and I keep singing their praises at every opportunity. I came across this article today which reinforces what a great choice steel cuts oats are. So, if you are one of those who has not yet tried it (let me tell you once again that you are really missing out if you are not!), you might want to read this article I just came across on the Dr. Oz website.

Dr. Oz stresses the importance of a breakfast high in fiber. I have been more focused on high protein, so I usually add milk and peanut or almond butter to my oats to boost the grams of protein. That, of course, adds more calories. This works for me because I prefer a lighter lunch and dinner, but some days I need more calories available later in the day. So on those days, I will prepare the oats with water or unsweetened almond milk (love that stuff!!).

Dr. Oz adds flaxseed meal and fruit to his oats, as do I, but what he does that I don't is to use a touch of honey. I use a packet or two of artificial sweetener. I am not a fan of anything artificial, but I do like a touch of sweetness in my oats. I don't let myself use more than four packets over the course of a day (I use Stevia which I think it is a better choice than the others, but who knows), but I am thinking that I may start trying a touch of honey instead.

All in all, I found this article interesting and helpful, so i thought I would share.

    I absolutely love steel cut oats. I first had them in Ireland.

    I make them in my rice cooker. I set up the cooker the night before: oats, soy milk, whatever I am using for flavor this week (like apples, raisins and apple pie spice), and set the timer for the cycle to be done at 0600. I wake to the smell of hot apple pie through the house. There is usually about 5 servings when I put in fruit. Yummmy!!

    I've been eating Steel cut oats for years. I think I heard about them through the Maker's Diet Book.

    For those that don't want to cook it every day, I cook the largest serving size, then eat off it till it's gone. It lasts a good week in the refrig.

    emoticon emoticon emoticon that Diabetes without Drugs book I mentioned says the real Stevia (not the newer altered kind like truvia) is the only recommended articial sweetener... so we are adding to our kitchen... the book also addresses concerns on all the other sweeteners & why. if you ever get a chance, the book is jam packed & worth the read :)

    edits to add, btw, i always add about a tsp of vanilla... which enhances natural flavors & sweetness in foods. found it helped make oatmeal edible when I was 1st starting... (& have now grown to love ;) Looking forward to trying steel cut oats! Thanks!

    My doc said Stevia was the ONLY "artificial (although not really artificial) sweetener" I could use. I don't even trust Truvia (though probably better than sugar - it wasn't around when we had our discussion) cause it's been altered and isn't in it's true form. He said sugar, which I am not to use, is better than any other artificial sweetener. Honey is second choice to stevia. He is more strict with himself than patients and has quit using honey because you don't know what genetically modified plants the bees may have been in contact with.

    Quit eating oats when I got rid of brown sugar, although raisins help. Hadn't thought of adding peanut butter, almond butter. Will have to try again. I used to eat rice with butter and sugar and have learned to add stevia to the water when cooking instead of sugar later, except I often make a large batch and don't want all of it sweetened. So I also learned I could melt some butter, dissolve some Stevia in it and mix well. That gave the rice the added sweetness I was looking for.

    I love my steel cut oatmeal. I eat it with Splenda brown sugar, flaxseed meal, and peanut butter.

    I also like the even less processed oat groats.

    Yea... I have not used any artificial sweeteners with my oats... but I do occasionally use peanutbutter OR honey... with Banana. I like it! My favorite way is still with butter and an egg though! A little pepper... COMFORT FOOD! But I've started using the steel cut oats for EVERYTHING! I use it to replace rice in almost anything! At my house we now eat Black Beans and Oats! LOL! And chili with oats... Chicken and oats! ANYTHING with oats!!! I'm totally addicted to them! emoticon

    Oh, yeah, high fiber breakfast all the way! My new housemate & I agree that foods made with refined/processed grains just aren't worth it anymore--not for day-to-day eating.

    I have not yet gotten into steel-cut oats, mainly because I'm not usually up early enough to cook my breakfast. But now that the weather is cooling down I'd like to get into the habit of getting oats going in the crockpot the night before. And I need to replenish my flaxseed . . .

    I was able to find Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats at one of our local markets. I add flax seed, fruit and Agave Nectar. YUMMY Great way to start the day!!

    Thank you for sharing,I my self use Steal cut Oat meal, and I Love it I saw it first on Oprah many many years ago, she was talking about and from then I am using it but I only make it with water and a pinch of salt nothing else, and to me it taste very good, I will always have Steal cut Oat meal, emoticon emoticon emoticon
