Music is what feelings sound like. ~Author Unknown

Sunday, September 25, 2011

Music has always "spoken" strongly to me. Sometimes I get as much out of the choir singing, in church, as I do from the sermon.

Today the music rose up and smacked me right in the heart. Oh, it wasn't a great song of the ages or a beautiful hymn, but for me, it was just as powerful. It was "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and in my mind and heart I could just picture and hear my brother belting it out. It was always one of his favorites. Tears ran like rivers down my cheeks. It was like I had no control over myself. It was that powerful.

Memories can sneak up and grab you when you least expect it. Boy, was I not expecting that today.

You are so right, Patty. Music speaks to a deeper part of all of us. It raises goosebumps, makes tears flow, lifts our hearts.

What you said is so true. Sometimes I hear a song from the 60s or 70s and it will bring back memories of my early years in California and when I went to college in Santa Barbara. Thanks for sharing.

I love the quote--had never heard it! And those experiences are emotional, but also a blessing. I'm glad for you!

That happens to me a lot...more as I get older. Everyone in my church knows that certain hymns will very likely bring on the water works. I even have to be careful when I'm driving and listening to a Christian contemporary station on the radio. "I Can Only Imagine" is going to bring on the tears. It's just a matter of degree.

Some of it, I think is due to maturing in faith, but I don't think that's the whole of it. The music itself has been known to move me to tears. The first time it happened to me, I was listening to Andrea Bocelli on a PBS special. I had no idea what the words he sang meant, but the tears flowed like crazy.

Music is such a gift to us here on this earthly plane. Funny, I never met your brother, but I can imagine him singing, too.

    "Will the circle, be unbroken,
By and by, Lord, by and by,
    There's a better home a-waitin'
In the sky, Lord, in the sky!"

That is a wonderful memory. Our church organist (and good friend) lost her husband last Sunday morning suddenly (heart attack at home) and the funeral was yesterday - I could not go but DH went. My husband preached this morning to give our pastor a "break" because our pastor and the organist have been good friends since before he even came to the congregation. Music evokes such memories and they are powerful. It is hard but important to be reminded...you have such great memories of your brother. emoticon
