So I was planning on doing a half marathon Nov. 12. I had a great 9.5 mile run yesterday and was feeling pretty confident about being ready for Nov. 12. Then I found out, it is the same day as my cousin's violin recital - her BIG recital - the one she has been working towards the last four years of college. So, I don't want to miss that. The race (2 and 1/2 hours from my house) and the recital are opposite directions from my house, and I can't make both work! I looked around for some other halfs, but there aren't any in November and even the ones in October are either next weekend, or too far from my house to afford to make them work.

I am trying hard not to feel disappointed. I guess I will just wait until spring and maybe do another 10K in between. I just feel like I have been working so hard! The half marathon will be there next year, but my cousin's recital will only be once.

A question for other runners - how can I keep my mileage up through the winter? Is there some kind of maintaining program I can follow?

You could also back off on the distance for a couple months and focus on speed, then ramp your distance back up for the spring. Many people find that alternating periods (measured in months) of focusing on distance/endurance with periods of focusing on speed/intensity works. It helps keep it interesting and you're less likely to suffer burnout.

I actually thought about that, and having a picnic w/friends afterward! Maybe I'll do that and then keep up my mileage for April. Do you have any ideas on maintaining?

Well you could so your own half marathon. Not as much hoopla as an organized race, but at least it gives you a goal for your training.

Yeah, there are some in October but either they're too soon or too far. The Nov. 12th was just so perfect. It was low key, inexpensive, and I could stay at my grandma's the night before.

That is a major bummer. Where do you live? Almost all our opportunities to run distance races are in Nov and Oct. I assume you've checked half marathon guide.
