Oktoberfest Marathon

Flashback - Last Wednesday 9/14. I'm looking at people's facebook statuses and there are a ton of my running friends turning the upcoming training run of 26 miles into a training marathon. Why not get the medal if you're going to run the distance right? I was waffling all over the place about doing this myself for a while now and I missed out on the marathon that all (well, almost all) of my friends were doing. It had sold out. (That one was Fox Valley Marathon in Illinois.) I had heard of another marathon in Michigan that some other runners were going to do. So I look it up, it looks like it might be a good one. I text the person I thought was running. He wasn't going, he was doing the training run on the bike trail, but he told me someone else was running!!! She is an awesome lady, so I decided to totally go with her and her husband to run this race.

So implusive me, I'm running a marathon suddenly on Saturday. (to be fair, I have been training, I didn't just wake up one day and decided to run a marathon, I've been training all summer and this weekends run was supposed to be 26 miles so, yeah, and stuff.)

Flashforward. The RACE (or in my case a nice slow long run.)

The Race was Oktoberfest Marathon in Grand Haven, MI. It was beautiful and I can't say enough about the scenary and the race staff and volunteers. I've never been so impressed by a small race. Even though we were the last through, there was always someone at the waterstops. There were people making sure we took the right turns. There were course marshall's stopping traffic whereever we needed them.

I made my goal!!! (which being that it was a training run and not a race was actually to run my slowest marathon.) I ran a nice long slow run. 6 hours, 30 mins. I am proud to be one of the last two finishers!!!!

I'm really looking forward to Chicago. I would like to get an awesome time in for that one. My goal time for that race is between a 5:30 and a 5:45. I'll still be happy with a finish no matter what!!!!

Way to go!!! Such a good idea to run a marathon for your practice run! I might have to steal that idea!! My training plan has me max out at 20 miles though (3 times in the schedule). Anyway, great job on your slowest marathon! Wooohoo!
