My First 5k: 2011 Race for the Cure

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Ok let me just start this off with I stole these pics from CBAILEYC's blog because I forgot my camera. So thank you, Candy, for taking pics! you were very much more prepared than me and I had an awesome time meeting you emoticon

Like the dork that I am, I got to the race WAY early. It was still dark outside, and pouring rain. That did not bode well for me, but luckily the rain cleared up. I also started the morning off with a trip to Starbucks that cost me $5.65 for my cup of coffee. Ridiculous, I know. After I had chugged the contents of my Venti Skinny Carmel Macchiato with a quad shot of espresso, I cracked open a sugar-free Rockstar. I know, they're horrible for you, but I was so excited I hadn't slept at all and I was staring in the face of a 3.1 mile race. Ha! that rhymed. cool.

I met up with Candy and her husband Bill at about 7:30, and we took the moment for a great pre-race photo op

Candy and Bill were there to walk at a later race but I had to get to the starting line for mine at 7:45. Here I am ready to rock, bib number 1001.

There were SO MANY PEOPLE I didn't think I would actually be able to run in this, my first 5k. But surprisingly, people moved like a wave past the starting line and I got into a pace that was slightly too fast. After about a mile, I had to slow down. The energy was great and there were people cheering at every corner. I've never seen so many people on the streets of downtown Portland and it was beautiful. We were all there for a great reason.

About half-way through the race I realized that I did not need the sweatshirt I was wearing. Oops! I also realized that I probably looked like a dork carrying my cellphone, but I didn't have time to put it back in my car before the race started. another oops! Here I am nearing the finish line
My official time was 30:55. My goal was under 35 minutes, so I think I did pretty well. Oh, I forgot to stretch after my run, and I'm still feeling it, so for anyone who is thinking about running a 5k, heed my words...STRETCH AFTERWARDS!

At the end of the day, it was a great time, and I'm so happy I got to meet Candy and Bill. Thanks for cheering me on, guys! And thanks again for the pics emoticon

You did it in great time!! I ran the untimed women's race in 38 min- I was hoping to catch up with you guys but it was a madhouse there! I would have been there at the finish line but we had to meet with JAMMASTERJENN's group at the same time by the fountain.

I know how you feel though- I wore my zip up athletic sweater because it had a pocket for my phone, but I was dying after the first mile. Thankfully we got stopped for traffic to pass so I had a chance to take it off, but then I had to carry my phone too! It was a great day, I definitely want to run more 5k's now. Maybe next time we'll all be able to catch up! =)

You can in fabulous time! It was so much fun seeing you finish.
I figured the sweatshirt would be too much, but I also knew some things, you have to learn for yourself LOL You've got that lesson now! Layer, and always be ready/willing to pull off and tie around your waist your outter-most layer.
Good job, girlie! There's no stopping you!
