So, I'm Doing 5k Race... Funny How Things Work Out...

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Alright, so rewind a few months... I was really wanting to learn to run in the spring. I posted an ad locally trying to find someone to teach me the right/best way to start, etc. This one guy wrote me back, but he was out of town and it didn't work out. Anyway, so yesterday this same guy sends me an email sharing some information about a 5k race that he's the director for on October 30th. It's a flat route, and family friendly so I called my girlfriend, Cassie to see if she was interested in doing it too. It was agreed... Let's try it! But neither of us registered just yet. Well today, I texted her, "So we are doing the 5k, right? I can register this afternoon?"... And she said to call her, so I did. LOL! Turns out her work is hosting a 5k race one week earlier and she either has to enter the race or volunteer at the race. So we've decided to this one instead! Strange how things work out sometimes... Like when you know you are on the right path, on the right journey and things are just kinda falling into place. And I posted on here yesterday that I was thinking about doing a 5k and Addy said she just signed up for one at that time too! So exciting! And so completely in sync - so I know it's right! ;) AND, Tiffany totally helped too "Do it! Make yourself proud!" I'm going to!!!! Thank you for all the support anyone ever shares with me - I appreciate each of you! At this point, I'm figuring I have to step up and take chances and pursue opportunities when they come. I can't just sit around waiting for everything to happen TO me or FOR me... I am in control of my life. I make the decisions that shape my life, and make me who I am. And well, I didn't end up learning to run in the spring. I was supposed to meet with someone at my gym but she never showed, and then the only other response was from a personal trainer - and I don't have the funds for that, as much as I'd like to do that. So at that time, what did I do... Let that goal fall by the wayside. No more! We are now set to do this 5k in 38 days. And training starts tonight! I know and accept that I am not going to be setting any records, or placing in the top 10 or anything... but for me, I'm excited for this set a starting point - to log a benchmark from which I can tangibly mark my progress when I run the next time, and the time after that. I'm excited for my workouts to have a purpose, and an outcome. A short term goal that will keep me on task and focused. I'm nervous because I'm not yet a runner and there isn't much time. And I'm feeling self conscious already - trying to keep that self talk out - but I'm going to be real here for a minute, I'm still a big girl and I'm going to run - in public, where people can see me! Eek! A part of me just wants to scream and run away at just that very statement alone! But then the other part of me, this new part is so wildly excited at something new and everything it means! I want to run. And I'm excited that I'm going to do this 5k before I turn 30 years old. I'm changing my life, one day at a time. But I'm doing it - I'm walking the walk so to speak. Alright well I gotta be at the track in 30 minutes to start our training... wish me luck!!!! Oh! And any tips on training do's or don'ts is welcomed!

emoticon You can do this! In training for a 5k, you'll get a feel for the time you're aiming for, but on the day when the other people and the natural spirit of competition creeps in, I bet you'll end up even surprising yourself with your time! But regardless of the time, you and your friend will be creating a memory together..."Remember that first 5k we ran together?! I swear that guy had a sock in his shorts...blah blah blah" emoticon
