I'm a foodie. I love to cook, feed others, eat, read about food, explore diet and nutrition and eat out. Eating out is my favorite form of entertainment and I have found that I can eat almost anywhere within the limits of my particular life style - the South Beach Diet. I thought I would share a few of my favorite restaurants and the foods I love to eat there that allow me to stay on track and eat healthy. I won't go in to the detail of how many calories and carbs each has because you can find all that on the web. Generally I look over a menu on-line before going to the restaurant so I know in advance what to expect. So here goes:
We will start with last night - California Pizza Kitchen. I have been going there for years and have found that their salads are just as awesome as their pizzas! They have some really good choices for low carb/low cal eating with the cob salad at the top on the list. My current fave is the half Roasted Vegetable Salad with shrimp. It is glorious! The veggies are served warm over a nice bed of lettuce tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette and the shrimp are served warm all around the top of the salad. Roasted veggies include red peppers, onion, artichoke, asparagus and I don't remember what else! So delicious!
For the last twenty years we have been going to a local tacqueria after church. This is our favorite place and we can feed our family of five for twenty dollars! Generally anything eaten without the tortilla is good but my current fave there is a tostada with refried beans, beef, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, avocado, onion, cilantro and pica de gallo. I eat everything but the shell.
Chipotle is great as long as you pass on the tortilla there too. The salad is so huge I always eat way too much so last week I found a new way to cut back on the quantity. I get one soft taco with beans, chicken, fresh tomatoes and medium salsa, sour cream, cheese, lettuce and my dh and I share a side of avocado. It sounds like a small amount but it is just right! Again leave the tortilla.
A cob salad is always a winner. I get that if all else fails. Always available at the Italian Deli downtown or the local sports bar. A half salad is perfect for me there too. Always pass on the bread!
Looks like I have been eating a lot of salad lately but if you are wanting something different go for grilled salmon with roasted veggies or something in a picata sauce (lemon and capers) or a scaloppini sauce (mushrooms and marsala wine) or even a shrimp scampi (garlic and butter!) This is really over simplifying the many choices available, but they are some of my favorites.
I pretty much always steer away from desert but if I have some calories left over a nice latte is a delicious way to end any evening!
Don't despair if you are headed out to dinner this labor day weekend! There are so many ways to have an awesome night out that is on track with your plan at the same time!
