Running

Thursday, September 01, 2011

"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement."
- Steve Prefontaine

I have a note in my cell phone that I wrote when I first started running. It says: Running is fun. I like the way it makes me feel like I have accomplished something. The quote above sums that up perfectly.

I ran my second 5k last Saturday. I finished it in 42:04. It was slower that my first 5k finish of 39:55, but I am OK with that. I finished. I also ran the first two miles without stopping which is a first for me. I am very proud of myself. I only took a two minute walking break and ran the rest of the race. It was a lot warmer that my first race (back in May) which I think was a large part of why it was a slower finish time. I run slow to begin with, but I run extra slow when it is hot out.

"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that."
-Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder

Congrats on your running and your great attitude! I am doing my first duathlon this fall and it's the running that has me worried because it's not something I've done much of. This week was my first week of training and I've really enjoyed it so far! Thanks for more inspiration! emoticon emoticon

GREAT quotes, Rachel! Saying, "I finished!" or "I did it!" is a great feeling of accomplishment with any and every goal! I blew my knee out in karate a year and a half ago, but running a 7-minute mile is still on my bucket list. My knee seems to be doing well with the bit of jogging I do each morning. That bit of jogging is working up to half of one of my figure eights on the downhill side. I'm almost there, too!

Thanks for your postitive blog, girl!

Thanks for the inspiring quote!! I used to love to run daily, but quit for many reasons (excuses). Now that I try to go back to running, I CAN'T seem to do it. After a two miles, my body gives up. I don't get it??? I seem to have this mental block that I can't break. I'm a very active person. I go to the gym at least 5 to 6 days a week. You would think I would be in okay shape to run, but for some reason when I get on the treadmill or try to run outside, my head gets in the way and prevents me from reaching that goal of running 3, 4 or more miles. I'm going to try your approach and see if I can be successful.
