It just doesn't stop

Monday, August 29, 2011

Lo and behold - I get into a great rhythm and start an active routine again and think - shedding 2 to 3 inches for my wedding - no problem. Well it seems like the joke is on me. My Achilles has been tender and a little swollen. Yesterday it was extremely tender. Got it looked at by my fiancee (who is a chiropractor and an acupuncturist) and even got a second opinion and confirmed my worse fears. Looks like I have a partial tear.

Good news is that I just need to keep off of it for a week and then slow down on my running. The bad news is that every time I stop running, I just can't stop packing on the pounds. Lord knows I don't want to end up on crutches again like I did last year but it is so hard to stay positive.

My health has finally turned the corner and I have been feeling stronger and healthier each day. I have an awesome support group both at home and online with my sparkfriends, but it is so frightening to think that this injury just won't go away. Any time I up my mileage or my speed I seem to keep re-injuring myself. I have already given up on doing any 5Ks or anything beyond that for fear of injury. However, I never thought I would have to give up running altogether. Some people struggle to exercise because they can't find something they enjoy doing. I know what I like to do. I absolutely love to run. I love how it makes my body feel and I love how in those precious minutes (used to be hours) of running there is this peace that takes over my mind that I just cannot get any other way.

Okay. I'm done whining .... for now

Awwh :( I'm sorry your hurt! I hope it gets better very soon and you can start running again without injury! I know what you mean by that inner peace that comes from running it's like you can just let go of everything for a little while and it's freeing!!! So, I get what you mean and I would feel the same had I injured myself and couldn't run! You just relax and let yourself heal and do other exercises until you heal. Then once you can run again take it easy and start off slow until you trust you are strong enough to run the way you want to.

I'm going to start doing some exercises on a stability ball and pick up some hand weights this week. Cannot do anything that involves shortening or strengthening my Achilles - which means I basically cannot move it. Just have to do exercises that do not require me standing or bearing weight.

Thank you so much for you concern and kind words as well as your suggestions. Sorry about your breathing problems. I hate it when out health or injuries get in the way of our goals

Make sure you let it heal. So sorry you are hurting. Hang it there! Are there any chair exercises you can do to keep the pounds at bay?? I have trouble even walking, because of my breathing, so I understand when you can't move the way you want.
I do floor and chair exercises at home, work the machines at the gym and cycle on the recumbent bike. Could you do the bike?
