Allergy/Asthma appointment

Friday, August 19, 2011

Yesterday morning was my appointment with the allergist. He is very nice & very thorough.

First, they poked me all over my back & arms to see what I'm allergic to. The answer: pretty much everything, but especially grasses, trees, mold & dust mites. One of the grasses on my arm swelled so much that I can barely move my shoulder joint.. it is about the size of a baseball.

Next, they did a breathing test. I breathe in okay, it is breathing out that gives me the problem.

Next, he numbed the inside of my nose with a spray & proceeded to stick a scope up my nose. I have a deviated septum which is part of the reason I have a hard time breathing out of my left nostril. No polyps or anything... a lot of swelling/inflammation caused by allergies.

Last test on the menu was a chest x-ray. I won't get the results from that until my next appointment in 2 weeks unless there is an issue. Dr wanted to make sure that my lungs are clear after having walking pneumonia TWICE in 2010.

Dr took me off of the over-the-counter Claritin & is keeping me on the pro-air inhaler to use before exercise & as needed. My new meds are: 1) Singulair- 1/day 2) Alvesco inhaler 2/day 3) Omnaris nasal spray 2/day & 4) Bepreve eye drops 2/day. I also have to start allergy shots again.

I go back in 2 weeks to get tested for food allergies & to do another breathing test to see if these new meds are improving my lung function. The goals: 1) to be able to run with my husband & 2) to get rid of the circles under my eyes.

Good for you for getting checked out! I've been through that with my kids. I have asthma but I haven't done anything about it in a long time (I don't have attacks) but I really should go get checked out. Maybe I will make an appointment today! THanks for the inspiration!

OMG I am so sorry you had to go through all of those test!! My hubby had the scope thing done and had to have surgery for the deviated septum as well as having a mass removed. He HATES that scope!! emoticon
The good news is you know what is going on and you are on your way to a resolving the issues. Good luck with it all and please keep us posted...

I know what those tests are. I had the allergy testing when I was young (many yrs. ago:) and my back was one red mass. I hope you are able to get control of the allergies with the meds. Good luck and best wishes!!
