Making Memories

Friday, August 12, 2011

Well, our Tennessee vacation for this year is in the books. We took two of our grandchildren, granddaughter's boyfriend, hubby's brother and sister in law on this trip.

First stop was Crossville to visit our two granddaughters there and we all had dinner together at a place called the Bean Pot. Great country food and atmosphere and wonderful time visiting.

Next was Memphis.

First activity was supposed to be the River Walk at Mudd Island. We decided to go straight there and check in at the motel afterwards. By the time we found a place to park and got to the walkway - they had closed - AN HOUR EARLY. So we couldn't do the walk! OK - make the best of it, we walked up to the Peabody Hotel and were lucky enough to get there just before the famous "Peabody Ducks" did their march through the lobby to the elevators.

Check in at the motel: debit card refused because of the "limit" they set on in in a 24 hour period. Oh joy! But they were able to put one night on it and the next day I did the other two. WHEW!

Memphis Zoo and Graceland went without incident - except for the 104 degree temps with 114 degree heat index! Got to see my pandas! YAHOOO! And yes, hearing Elvis sing "Welcome to my World" on the headset as we went through the gates still made me get tears in my eyes!

Off to Nashville! First night we walked Music Row and saw the honky tonks, Coyote Ugly, Crazy Horse Saloon, Tootsie's Purple Orchid, etc. Had a Ghost Walk scheduled for 8. Walked to what we THOUGHT was the address.....something on Union Street and we knew it was out of a hotel, so stopped at the Sheraton and asked, "Is this where the ghost walk starts?" And they said yes it was. Waited, and waited....around 8:30 a lady showed up and asked if we were doing the walk. Gave her our paperwork. She came back and said "You're at the WRONG ghost walk. The one you want is up this street one block at the Hermitage Hotel! And of course we had missed it by then! She offered us her tour for $1 off, but I had already paid for the other. Called them and they said we could do it the next night. NOT - we had Opry tickets! So, we were able to work it in for Sunday night. WHEW!

Saturday at the Opry was GREAT.....happened to be the night the Oak Ridge Boys were inducted as members and what a performance they did. They were so emotional, it was awesome to be a part of that!

Sunday, General Jackson Showboat lunch cruise. Got there in plenty of time. Sat waiting in the docking area......no boat at the dock, seemed strange. Other people waiting, so figured we were OK. After a bit, got nervous and checked at the ticket office. We were at the WRONT place! (AGAIN). They now board the lunch cruise downtown. We'd done this three times before and it was always at the Opryland dock! She told us she would get a bus there to pick us up and they would hold the boat. They did......luckily.....we got there 20 minutes late, but there were about 25 of us, so at least it wasn't just us! LOL You'd think they'd have a sign there that indicated boarding for the lunch cruise had changed to the downtown dock, wouldn't you???

Monday we headed to our cousins' home across the state. We'd bought restaurant gift cards to make things easier and of course to get the fuel perks! Stopped at a Subway Restaurant....placed an order for over $40, got to the register and the girl said "Sorry, we don't take Subway gift cards!" I looked at her and said "BUT THIS IS SUBWAY!" Thankfully we had enough cash to cover it. I really wanted to ask her "Well, do you take Cracker Barrel then?" LMAO

So - those are some of the highlights of the "memories" we brought home from this trip - but truthfully - those are the kinds of things that bring laughter when we say "remember when...."

Like my grandkids to this day say "Grandma, remember when you got stuck on the slide in the fun house at Niagara Falls!" LOL i started down, got one leg caught under me and couldn't move. Hubby is saying "get up hon, get up hon" and I'm going DON'T YOU THINK I WOULD IF I COULD! I was laughing soooooo hard and you know what happens to an elderly woman when she laughs that hard? Yep, walked back with my sweater tied around my waist! LMAO!

But seriously, I think one of the best moments of this trip was the last evening, sitting on our cousins' porch, listening to the mountain stream rushing across the rocks in the distance, looking at the mountains, hearing crickets chirping, traditional country music playing on the radio and just visiting......THAT's a memory for me! A little bit of heaven!!!

Hope you enjoyed the trip with me...........
