Jumping Out of a Perfectly Good Airplane
Friday, August 05, 2011
The old saying “Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane if it’s not crashing?” came to me one morning last month when my alarm clock went off at 4:30am. Then my thoughts went to, “Why am I getting out of my perfectly good bed, in the middle of the night, when there’s no fire in the house!” LOL
The reason I, through my blurry eyes, was fumbling to shut my alarm off and dragging my sorry tush out of that very comfortable bed, was because I had pre-paid my registration for a 5K run that morning. BTW, putting money down ahead of time for something like that is VERY motivating! I have no doubt that if I would have waited to register until that morning, I would have stayed in the proverbial airplane! LOL
You have to realize that I’m NOT a runner by nature and I'm NOT a morning exerciser. Some people just seem drawn to running early on. I remember doing what was called a “12 Minute Run” in high school gym class. We were supposed to try to get 4 laps around the track in 12 minutes (that would have been 1 mile). Yeah, right. There were those who would make it around in ½ that time (or at least it seemed like it). NOT me. My legs wouldn’t work and my head was foggy the whole time I was running/walking, no matter what time of the day it was, but definitely worse in the morning.
So... what makes me think I’m going to be a runner now, at almost 47 years old? Determination. Determination to stretch myself - be the best "me" I can be. I’ve got a new view on life. If not this, what? If not now, when? I have a friend (waves at Mary
) who calls it “new starting lines”. I like that. Challenge yourself. Do something different. Always working towards your goal. That’s where I’m at right now. And my running is just another starting line for me on my journey to my ultimate goal of good health & fitness.
So, tomorrow morning, the alarm will go off at 4:30 again. Yep, another airplane to jump out of. And, yes, I’m pre-paid!
