Bike riding is rejuvenating me in my 50's!

Bike riding! I didn't imagine that a joyful activity of my childhood would be such a blessing in my 50's. I hadn't ridden for over 30 years, but got back on the seat this spring, just in time to hit the new rails to trails bike path in my town. I am amazed that after just 3 months I feel so energized.

The first time I took the bike out--an excellent used bike from a dear friend--I rode 6 minutes before being totally winded. The second time I got to just over 10 minutes. I bit the bullet and bought a bike rack and get to a flat area, but still only rode for a mile or so. However, every time I went out, I doubled the distance, until I rode 20+ miles in June--and I felt great after it.

The trail is amazing. Rabbits, chipmunks, and deer make regular appearances. The 11 miles I have been on are covered by honeysuckle and another fragrant flower. The trail runs beside a river. I listen to books or praise music or just to the wind. I think or pray or just observe. The walkers and other bikers are all super friendly. It is such a rest, a break from a hectic life, to be biking along.

I am thankful that my body is responding to the exercise so well. I had begun to think that my very active days were over and that I was winding down! Now, I feel like I am full of energy and am even losing some weight!

I am so glad that bike riding has come into my life.
