3 mile bike ride

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Got in a 3mile/30 minute bike ride this morning and it was perfect weather! Too bad it's going to get hot later on today. I got called into work this afternoon so I won't be able to be online but for a minute or two. Yay! I need the work so bad!!
I went over to the International Academy of Design and Technology and am seriously considering going back to school to get my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree! That is a complete turn from what I got my AAS in! My degree is in Human Services right now, but I have always wanted to do graphic design and I sure as heck don't have anything better to do! This is a dream I have had for more than 30 years but kids and life got in the way! I have not been this excited about anything in years!
I do like working as a social worker, but it is not my passion, art has always been my passion!
I want to be a web designer so I can help out the Glass Slipper Ministries with their website, cards, brochures, etc.! I haven't decided yet, because of the money and because I am almost 58 years old, but even if I don't get a job as a graphic designer, at least I will have a specific skill set that I can use to help non-profits! Anyhow, just my thoughts on this. I would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this too! Thanks, Sue

I think it is awesome that you are thinking about going back to school; I would certainly do it. Right now I am focusing on things that I teach myself, but I am certainly leaving the door open to do otherwise in the future.

That is so cool! I am a firm believer in doing what you love (not that I wanna talk you out of social work). Studies show that people who love what they do, do it better. I am ,also a firm believer in continuing to learn throughout life (I just can't afford to be a life long student, LOL).

First of all, love the "AAS" degree acronym! I'd have so much fun with that. I have a degree in law (J.D.) but in Canada it's called a Bachelor of Laws. My dh loves that and says that I have a degree in "BLAW BLAW BLAW". hehe.

Second, go for it!!! Age does not define choices. Life is to be lived. One of my friends just finished her degree at age 65, only grandmother in law school who owns a ranch and can castrate a bull :)

Let us know what you decide.

My thought is it is NEVER too late to do what God has given you a PASSION for and that He will in turn use it to His glory! GO FOR IT! What are you waiting for???

You should definitely do it, if it is something that your heart would enjoy. But take Jay's advice and make sure to speak to several youngins and seasoned people who are working in the field for their advice on different programs.

My youngest brother is studying via AI out of Florida (and he lives in Houston) so he's able to study online and loves it.

I think it's super that you've begun to re-make your vision of life and what you want to do with it! Way to Spark, girl! If you have the talent and the drive for it, you will make something good happen.

My suggestion is to keep exploring the options to pursue your dream, but be cautious of getting high student loans at a private institution. I've read some horror stories about career colleges that don't lead to anything more than huge debts. I suggest doing some information interviews with people already working in the field to see how they prepared for their career in terms of education and experiences.

A lot of graphic designers work freelance for others or start their own businesses. When I was researching the Internet to find a logo designer, I found so many businesses and they would offer lots of different services in the general area of graphic design and websites. I have been working with someone who is a designer and a website programmer, so he can work in website code as well as work on design elements.
