Ready, Set, Train! Marathon #5 on deck and half #10 RR

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Last year, when I was training for my first marathon, I swore up and down that I would never run another marathon again and yet here I am ramping up training for number 5! The 40th running of the Space Coast marathon.

I have to say that I am pretty excited about this training. It's a fresh start to my running after pulling serious mileage to qualify for half fanatics and marathon maniacs back to back. I am looking forward to training for me and my goals and not just to do another race after race after race. I picked out my plan, made my adjustments and I am ready to hit the ground running!

On the flip side, I am a little nervous. I have been running about 3 years now and I have always had my running buddy. Our goals have changed so we will both fly solo for the most part and that will be challenging. I will have to listen to my thoughts on 20 mile long runs instead of chattering back and forth about life and gossip. When my legs fatigue I will have to convince my self to keep going. When I get up at the butt crack of dawn for training runs I know there will be nobody to go with. I know I can do it but its going to be a change for sure!

I am also a little nervous because I have set a tough goal for my self. Well, I have two goals really. The first is to PR. The second is to run a sub 5hr marathon. I know if I train right and work hard I can do it. But can I push my self when negative thoughts squirm their way in?
My current marathon PR is on this course and was a 5:42 last year. Last year's race was actually a training run though. I was ramping up mileage for the goofy challenge at Disney and was only scheduled for a 22 miler that day and decided to do 26.2 instead. With that being said the last few miles were pretty much walking or going at a very easy pace. I have never actually run a marathon for time. The first I was very injured and only wanted to finish, the second was a training run and the last two were to qualify for MM. This one is for TIME baby! And I hope I don't let my self down.

Half #10 Race Report!
I ran the Make It By Midnight half marathon in Macon, GA on the 16th and it was so much fun!! It's a crazy little marathon and half with no start time, only a finish by time, midnight! The course opens at 3pm and closes at 1am. If you make it by midnight you receive a tiara and finishers medal. If you don't make it by midnight you receive a pumpkin and a tiara. I had the pleasure of running this race with some of the most amazing girls! Becki (marathon_mom, Wendy (runtrilaugh), Suezette (Suezette-414) and Holly (Runnrgrrl74). I had never met Becki or Wendy before then and it was like we have known each other for years! Well, we have really. on SP! We had such an awesome time, I just wish we had more time to hang out! Becki and Wendy started the race early because they were doing the full. Holly, Suezette and I started around 6:30ish (I think) when Becki and Wendy looped around for their first lap of 4. It was raining a little but felt nice with that GA heat! The hills were crazy and challenging and after the half way point they were taking their toll on my legs (FL is way too FLAT!). Thankfully Suezette stayed with me and kept me motivated. I didn't realize I was negative on the course but any time I hinted to letting the hills win, Suezette squashed those thoughts. quickly! Just about the half way point we ran into Becki and Teal with some other runners and chatted for a bit. I finished in 2:58 (and yes, before midnight) and finished 3rd in my age group! Between the hills and heat my legs were fatigued and glad to finish. Suezette superwoman decided to make a 3rd loop and run a 30k instead of a half to finish out with Wendy, which was awesome! This was a special race for Wendy as it qualified her for the marathon maniacs! YAY WENDY!! It was awesome to be there for her qualifying race! Becki suggested I make a MM cake and we celebrated her victory after the race!!
It was such a blast! I will do this race again next year, so watch out GA hills!!

Ok. I know I am forgetting a lot but that's enough chatter for now. I am going to work on blogging more often now that I am training for the full again. I need to track my progress and keep my self accountable!!
I have a 3 miler tonight, 5 tomorrow, 3 Thursday and 8 This weekend!! I go!!

Enjoy the training!!! You may find you really enjoy solo running - esp. since you are married w/ kids, it's truly "alone" time. I know I savor my Saturday morning long runs. They are a life saver!

Sounds like the half was a lot of fun! And congrats on your AG place!

This is a fantastic blog! So many people go it alone, you'll have all of us for support and motivation. Get your playlist ready right? You are, I just know it, going to PR your race. You are a much faster runner than I am on a daily basis and my PR marathon was 5:27. I did a run walk 4:1 and was in most people's mind 'really slow'. Your race report was awesome. It was so nice of you to make a cake for Wendy! I can only hope that someday i'll have the time to train and run and join you guys with MM! Keep posting your training runs, i'd love to keep up!

    Your cake was very cool.
Those hills kicked my butt ,too. You weren't the only one feeling negative during that race. Those conditions were brutal.
After the tough races you've had - the Space Coast will be a piece of cake.

It wasn't that you were negative on the course but you were driving me absolutely NUTS with the "I'm sorry...just go"
Believe me, if I wanted to go, I would have!

Good luck! Ever since starting to train with a group, I don't know if I can go back to training alone! As my marathon coach said, it's going to be hard for us even to run for a bus without each other! You won't really be alone though, it sounds like you've got tonnes of support!!!
