1 year change-versary: 22 kilos & health

it's not a spark-versary because i joined spark a while before i started this journey seriously. today is a year since i got back from what would have been (was anyway) a glorious family trip to Tuscany except that i missed a step at the Siena train station getting off the bus and very badly sprained my knee, tore my meniscus, etc. and spent the next week in severe pain (refusing to see a doctor because i was, inaccurately, convinced they'd tell me to stop walking and i couldn't, I was on vacation with my family in my favorite place in the world). i knew that the at least 50 lbs overweight made walking much much worse and I wanted to make sure my physical flaws never made spending time with my family and doing what I love so painful ever again.

so now i've lost 22 kilos and am eating food i love (slowly restoring very occasional and carefully measured treats like croissants and financiers ...) and am stronger this summer before I turn 60 than I probably have ever been. i love bootcamp exercises (especially with the ball). i am doing C25K, ran 21 consecutive minutes the other day and am in week 6, and am doing a 6k race in central Paris in September (only after that will i decide if i really like running:-). i don't wince at reflections in windows or avoid mirrors anymore.

i did this for health and not looks (though feeling i look better feels really good!!). it's been very up and down with long discouraging plateaus -- but i mostly kept plugging away and feeling stronger because i was working out. i'm still struggling with managing exercise time, family time, and getting my work done (freelance translating, working for myself, means it's hard to say no to clients) and still feel it's almost impossible to get more than 2 of the 3 of those done well on any given day (let alone me time that's not specifically workout time). but over the week, it's coming together better.

this wasn't a diet ... it was a change in my life that i need (and want) to maintain for the rest of my life. and with continued support from spark people and my spark friends and my other friends and my family ... i will!!

    Great! And Congrats on La Parisienne, I just read your other blog, which led me to this one. Well done :-)
    So do you think you'll race again? Or keep on running regularly? Or have you found something else that you prefer?
    Me, I can't run, bad kness... so I walk :-)
    I totally relate to doing this for health and not for looks... but like you I'll probably be happier with the way I look as I lose the weight emoticon

    I'm so happy for you that you've made these changes and feel better for it!
    My prediction is that the 6K race is going to convince you that you love running. It just feels SO GOOD to know that you've completed something that you've worked so hard for.
    I understand about how tough it can be to balance everything. I'm glad you're still trying, though!
