Frustrated Runner Girl

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

I have been plagued over the years with knee pain when I run. Inevitably, it stops me from running and eventually I stop working out altogether and gain those dang 10 or 15 pounds that seem th haunt me.

I have been running again of late and not having many issues. Until Sunday. The knee pain resurfaced. It is excruciating pain on the side of my knee, near the back. I try to "work through it" but it doesn't go away. If I walk it typically subsides but the second I start to run again it rears it's ugly head.

Research indicates I have iliotibial band syndrome. Basically that ITB is rubbing on the bones causing the pain flares. It can be caused by overuse or biomechanical issues such as the way I walk. Given that this has happened to me so many times over the years, it is likely due to biomechanical issues.

I bought an ITBS strap to try and that didn't work. I still had pain and it irritated the crap out of my leg. I will try it again of course, a few more times to see if I can get used to it and if it will help. If not, next step is a different leg brace. If I still cannot overcome it, I will have to schedule with a podiatrist to see about possibly getting orthotics. I hear that those are helpful to resolving the biomechanical issues. However, my health insurance BLOWS so I am trying to avoid too much medical usage if possible.

Here's hoping I can overcome the bummed feelings that have clouded in on me. I went home last night and enjoyed comfort food galore after a very unsuccessful gym trip. That, of course, brought on guilty feelings. Can't win that way!

Today I rest and ice it. Tomorrow I am trying again. Wish me luck. I could use it.

When I had ITBS, I ended up going to Physical Therapy and got it worked out. If you don't have that option, you might want to check out the injury forum at Runners World:

There is a LOT of good info there.

well for sure frustrating beyond belief but yes for sure don't be doing something that may injure you for good.

Read up as much as you can....alternatives that may not bother your knee so much.

Running not on pavement...some people swear by only on treadmill for cusioning the joints.

Try everything! Till you find something that works...Fishoil for joint pain, only jogging instead of running every third day maybe? I don't know but feel your pain, and don't give up hun!

Try getting new shoes....being fitted for them....try...The a different something! GOOD LUCK! Hang in there and I think you are doing awesome! emoticon
