“Groundhog Day” and "50 First Dates" for Real: Woman is Stuck in 1994

Monday, July 18, 2011

Every day Michelle Philpots wakes up in 1994. Due to brain injuries from two accidents, the British woman can recall everything up to that year, but each night forgets the events of the day before. "I want to be back to the normal me and not this shell of a person," she said.

So whenever you think that you are having a bad day, remember this poor woman.

Wow...what a horrible way to have to live. It's really too bad there's no good treatments for brain injuries. Such a complex organ and so much is lost when it's injured like that. Makes me very thankful for what I have!

According to the article, “Fortunately, she has a knight in shining armor in husband Ian. The pair met back in 1985, so she hasn’t forgotten him. But she can’t remember their 1997 wedding day; Ian has to show her their wedding album every morning to show her they are husband and wife.”

As a husband (and not a very good one at times according to my wife) I would be tempted to do so many things in this situation such as:

Add items to her memory Post-it notes and her phone diary telling her she really enjoys doing the things I hate to do and does them all the time.

Not show her the wedding album for stretches of time and explain that I am only a friend who helps her.

Have all money and processions in my name.

emoticon Before you start to blast me, I would be like a knight in shining armor similar to Ian.

I haveread about this before somewhere, it is so very sad, there are a few cases like this, I read another about a man who cannot comprehend that over 12 years or so have passed and is convinced his now grown up daughter is a stranger to him.

I saw this on TV. Terry Wallis awoke from a coma after 19 years. What was amazing was the dedication of his mother and daughter. He thinks his daughter is his wife. He awoke after 19 years in a coma. His mother dressed him and took him with her, nearly everywhere she went while he was still in the coma.

Good heavens!! How very sad - you never know what's round the next corner - or even the last one in her case - poor thing. Can't imagine living like that - but she has no choice. As so many say here - I'll remember her next time I open my mouth to bewail my lot. Thanks for pointing me this way.

I am like SILLYHP1953. I can envision the thing, but can't name it and get stuck when trying to talk for the name of something. Example: I want a hot dog on a bun with ketchup, but can't remember the word ketchup. I might envision the bottle of ketchup or a brand name of it.

My Mom has Alzheimer's. I wanted to be tested for it, but my doctor said if I was tested and found to have it, my insurance might drop me. Nice, huh?

I feel a little better about my memory now, or lack of it, cause my main problem is not being able to come up with the word I want.
