Bicycle commuting, days 20-21

Sunday, July 10, 2011

This week was good. I finished it out with a roundtrip on Thursday, and one trip on Friday. Thunderstorms were in the forecast for the whole afternoon and evening, starting around 4 pm. It was just starting to come down when I got to the Metro station with my bike. Fortunately, it had let up a bit by the time I got to the stop closest to where I parked my car.

It seems like the week is never uneventful. Fortunately, I didn't have any new flat tires this week. However, I did witness an accident between a cyclist and a car, right where the trail briefly becomes a street before connecting to the Rock Creek Trail.

Fortunately, the cyclist was fine, except for being psychologically bent out of shape. The first thing he did was start cursing the driver over and over, even before he got up off the ground. The driver had lost her way trying to find Key Bridge, and she was extremely apologetic. I hope she'll learn to be more careful, because this incident could easily have cost far worse consequences. I stopped and hung around long enough to make sure that the cyclist didn't need help, and then I went on my way. The next thing I know, I was in front of my building trying to lock up my bike, when I discovered that my U-lock wasn't working any more. Fortunately, I have a garage for backup.

At the end of the day, I took my lock back to the bike shop for another replacement (this is my 3rd now). If this happens again, I want a refund. I'm not sure I trust Onguard locks anymore.

Now that I've got biking down pretty well, I want to work on getting back into a habit of regular strength training. It has always been the first thing to go when the going got tough.

Kudos to the commuting! I'm going to wuss on it today as it's going to be so hot.

I think I have the same u-bolt lock...still works, but the bracket into which it's supposed to clamp while riding no longer holds it so I have to use my pannier and the u-bolt clunks around in it while I ride. Not sure the extra protection of a big u-bolt is worth the extra weight and hassles of dragging it along...!

Nothing beats a bike cable and padlock for ease of use, but I usually don't leave it locked up all day somewhere.

I just started cycling. Bobby and I bought new bikes (mine was about 15 yrs. old and his was from the 1970's...seriously). Now we have been riding on the weekends and I am starting to really like it. Yesterday we hit a park about 60 min. from home and it was a beautiful ride. Can't ride to work as we travel all day and I need all kinds of equipment. And Bobby is right, be careful out there! I had one driver yell at me yesterday to get off the road and ride on the sidewalks when it is clearly stated that bikes are not allowed on the sidewalks. Yikes....big meanie!
