I'm having clothes made!!!

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

I was serious when I called myself a fatshionista. I have a corporate job and I am sooo sick of tugging, pulling and stretching cheapo clothes from avenue, macy's, etc. So sometime last winter I hooked up with a dressmaker/costume designer who is large herself and she is making me custom tops - ALL SILK (hey lane bryant, have you heard of silk? ) - and custom fit to my exact body, chest, short arms as big as a waist, low necklines like I like, in colors that look good on my skin. Her jackets are too pricey for me though and make no sense to buy since I change sizes all the time, so I'm making do with my cardigan collection.

So far I have 3 things, and I'm waiting for two others. You know how all of the summer fat clothes are hideous and made in hey-look-at-me-I'm-a-schoolbus colors? And in crappy, pilly fabrics to top it off? Not me, not anymore. Soft chartreuse, pinky coral silk, royal blue patterns, tanzanite purple, yum! These dressmaker people can copy clothing and modify it for you, its a wonderful thing.

Also, now I fit in a lot of department store 3x's, so my choices are less limited. I like Nordstrom's Sejour line, which is their own, and recently Eileen Fisher has started to fit me in the stretchy things, but a lot of that is raggy looking as well as expensive (a bad combination, yes?). But due to my gut which makes me out of proportion, I can't wear anything heavily structured without looking like a big gray brick. Or SpongeBob.

Awesome! I love seeing people take power out of the hands of big stores and putting it back into their own. You've obviously made the decision that you are worth investing in, and I believe you are absolutely correct.

And, of course, like any good Diva, you are dressing appropriately for the life that you are living.

Knowing your own worth will help others to see it as well. Bravo!

    Congratulations how exciting for you!!

ROFL trailer park hooker!!! That really made me LOL. If I had a job or ever left my house for anything besides the gym I might consider having custom clothes made too! lol I'm just waiting until I can fit in my old clothes until then it's sweats and t's all the way! I feel you though on plus size clothes being craptastic. Every pair of pants I've ever gotten from LB has either busted holes in the thighs are pilled up so bad they were unwearable.

And I have to say its offensive that dept stores have pulled fat sections from their stores - I'm talking to you J Jill and Nieman Marcus - or leave them in a truly disgusting pile of disarray that you won't find anywhere else in the building - Macy's Oak Brook IL (the land of the posh). emoticon

Congrats, and excellent idea! Wow do I miss silk... I'm still amazed your Nordstrom even HAS 3x clothing, never mind bad quality 3 x clothing. In Los Angeles it's really hard to find anything above size 12, and those aren't available everywhere. Most shops here do XS, S, M, and sometimes L. Anything above that is carried online or not at all. I love the dressmaker idea!

I love it!! I have the same issues with clothing too...money to spend, but nothing good in the stores. I don't know why the fat fashion industry thinks the overweight gal-on-the-go wants to dress like a. a circus tent, b. a 12 year old, c. my grandmother, or d. a trailer park hooker. I fit into just about all plus sized clothing, but my problem area is my stomach, too...and it seems like 90% of the stuff I find in stores is for the large bottomed/thick legged set...congrats on finding a seemstress to make you EXACTLY what you want!!
