Lying to myself about my coffee calories

Friday, June 17, 2011

I've been guessing on my coffee intake. I use honey. I was guessing a packet in my big cup....I didn't want to really know how much I used. I fudged by guessing. 1 packet is 43 calories. When I really measured, I had to face that I'd been using 3 Tablespoons of honey every day - 192 calories! My big cup I'd guessed was 16 oz. It was really 28 oz. Now I've faced another portion size issue. That's 150 extra calories I wasn't counting when I logged (and tried to keep in my range) every day. On some level I knew I was lying to myself as I heaped the honey onto the largest spoon I could find, it was just one spoon, but it was heaped. Now I'm trying to wean myself down to a packet, or stevia, which has no calories. One stumbling block at a time, I'm removing them, it's a bumpy road, but it's getting smoother and smoother all the time. I'm getting healthier and stronger every day. I'm drinking my water, I'm doing 10+ minutes a day, I'm spinning, I'm doing my produce, I'm listening to my get up and go songs. Now back to logging and clearly measuring and knowing what I'm putting into my body. One step at a time, one carefully placed step, slowly and surely and heading in the right direction. emoticon emoticon

Ah, yes, the coffee monster. I use sugar and only a couple teaspoons so figure my morning coffees equal about 50 calories. I have it correctly set in my nutrition plan as a "grouping" (I use lots of fat-free milk also, a big source of my daily dairy) and don't worry too much about it since it's one of the things I really like/don't wish to change about my diet.

I was using real half-and-half when I started with SparkPeople and now am doing the good milk thing (and more of it since I have less sugar/fat) after trying low fat half-and-half (an oxymoron if there ever was one! How can you have cream with no fat?) and that made me angry when I read the ingredients, all the corn syrup, so I did something about it and have not regretted it!

I like to use agave nectar. I started taking stuff out of my coffee about a month ago. First I stopped adding milk, then I cut the sugar in half. Now I use a little bit of agave nectar.

You're going in the right direction. That's what is important.

They say the first step is admitting you have a problem!!! (insert smile). So now you move forward from here, giving yourself a HUGE pat on the back for the dose of reality you just gave yourself. Trust me, you're not alone!

good deal - if you really enjoy the honey (and it does have benefits that are fairly unique to honey) are there 150 calories somewhere else you can cut out?
the size of the mug doesn't matter for the coffee itself as it has no calories.. of course the size might encourage more honey...
or can you compromise and use less honey and cut out 75 calories somewhere else?

I did a combination of honey and stevia to wean myself in my chai. I'm down to all stevia now and am very satisfied. Yes, I know how much honey you've been using.... Glad you noticed and are trying to be accountable. Measuring sure makes a person aware, whether you want to be or not.

One step at a are making progress! We can do it!! I like Emma's idea of putting a tiny bit of honey on your tongue, then using stevia...may be satifiying the desire for honey. emoticon emoticon

you can fool yourself but not your body-- that's the problem!
looks like you've got it figured out, though, small small steps in the right direction. you don't have to change everything all at once, no shock-treatments necessary. that's what works in the long run.

Way to go! You are staying so accountable which is really the biggest step. Maybe if you are craving honey put the stevia in your coffee but put just the tiniest bit of honey on the tip of the spoon and put it on your tongue. That way you'll get the honey taste and then the coffee will still be sweet from the stevia!
