The good and bad

Thursday, June 09, 2011

I just joined Sparkpeople on Tuesday, and I was starting from "square 1" again after some less then half-hearted efforts at weight loss.

So, I think a good way to start is by giving myself a base "score" each time I check in, acknowledge my accomplishments, confess what happened with the "hiccups" and how I will avoid them going forward.

I would call yesterday an overall 2.5 (on a scale of 1-5, 5 being a GREAT day).

I started to build up my water habit again, and got about 48 oz. of water for the day. This is a good base amount for me (along with the little bit of milk and usual 16-24 oz of diet soda or Crystal light I drink) so I am glad for that, and will build that back into a consistent habit.

I'd like to bring the diet drink consumption down ideally, but I'm realistic, and being a picky eater, I find one of my limited pleasures in my beverages, so I'll be easy on myself as long as I stick to at least 48 oz. water every day.

My job is largely sedentary, though I have a lot of freedom to get up and walk around when I need to, especially for the sake of managing my back pain.

I ran errands during lunch, but didn't have enough time for the 20 minute walk I wanted to take. My good intentions were further frustrated because I went shopping for some groceries, but forgot to get something for my lunch while there, which forced me to go to a neighboring grocery store (taking extra time) to grab something there. I did that, and then gave into the temptation to try a Mountain Dew Coolatta at DunkinDonuts. I am not a DD patron - thankfully I do not drink coffee at all - but some friends know I have an affinity for Mtn Dew, and that coolatta was mentioned to me more than once.

It was a VERY hot day, so I consciously allowed myself that treat and chose a medium, not a large. That would have been fine except that I gave into the UNPLANNED temptation of getting 6 munchkins as well. Since I rarely ever go to DD, I rarely get donuts, and I do love those tasty buggers, especially when they fulfill my desire for variety with the different flavors of munchkins.

So, my lunch was "eh". I had Weight Watchers Mac and Cheese and my Coolatta (and I confess I did enjoy that drink!).

I wound up eating the munchkins for "dinner" because I had to leave for a ministry meeting less then an hour after I got home, and didn't want to bother with making a decent meal. I also had a toasted roll with margarine, chocolate sprinkles and maple sugar (on each half respectively).
So, dinner was a bummer too.

I did avoid really bad stuff after my meeting by just popping some popcorn for a late night snack, and I had water during the whole evening, so I give myself kudos for that at least.

I'm tempted to decrease my rating to "2", but I did start out well, and I did get my water in, and I also accomplished some things on my "Getting Things Done" Quicklist for the day.

Observations: The Coolatta was worth the calories, but I could do even better. Next time I will plan ahead for my decandence by buying a couple cans of diet Mountain Dew. Next time I would like that treat I'll get the small size, and if I feel the desire to have more liquid I'll add diet Mtn Dew to it to bolster it's size (Or go with a small and drink a sip of water for every sip of Coolatta!).

The munchkins, surprisingly were not that good once I had them. So, I'll just remind myself to save for those goodies I REALLY savor.

I will plan and prepare a few meals with appropriate portions, so I can "grab and go" for work, and so that they're easy to pop in the micro and heat up for dinner.

I will ask my husband to take a walk with me in the evevning at least twice in the next 7 days and if he is not up to it, I'll bring my ipod and take the walk anyway!

You have to allow for the decadences and roll with the ones you didn't plan. Sounds like you've done a good job of that - AND of setting reasonable yet worth goals for the short-term to keep the balance of good eating and acitivity. Good job!
