Today was my last day at work. I'm retired! I have been showered with lunches, gifts, hugs, a party - lots of love these past two weeks. The very same folks who have been called "thugs" and worse by some elected officials are in fact, the kindest, hardest working people in this state, and I'm proud to have worked with them.
This weekend my older son and his wife come to town for a wedding, and then two days after they leave, we follow them out to San Diego for the ceremonies surrounding him getting his doctorate. Our younger son is going too. Unfortunately his girlfriend can't go with us.
Lots of good things in our lives as we enter this new world.
My challenges related to health and weight loss will be reversed. Because I biked or walked to work, exercise was not a problem, but I didn't always eat well. Now I think I will do a better job paying attention to eating from hunger. But exercise could be a little more of a challenge. It's always something, right?

As you know I can barely disguise my envy at your retirement -- I hope the next 10 years go by FAST for us -- can't wait to have all the time in the world to hang with The Hubs!!! Congrats again, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

And I'm sure you'll find fun fitness to do even without being "forced to" by circumstance; you wouldn't've walked and biked to work in the first place if you didn't want to. And of course you're right about food being SO much easier to control at home than at work -- you'll have TIME to make exactly what you want, exactly as you want it! Don't know about you but I SO look forward to having a day at home to make stock or a long-cooking stew or something...heaven!

Enjoy and don't think about me endlessly toiling away for my corporate masters...

Wonderful news for you! I am a "union thug" (I am a cook for the state) so I agree we are the hardworking people. My mom has been retired for 5 years and is always busy with something.I have over 20 years to go before mine. Have fun!

    Congratulations Jet!!! Enjoy your retirement!!
Make yourself get up and get out there - you can always walk to visit those geese, if nothing else... Hopefully your hubby is active too so you can bike and walk together!
And congrats to your son - that is one long haul thankfully over!

CONGRATULATIONS! My husband retired 2 years ago from teaching and I was laid off the same month. It threw us for a loop but it's been awesome. We don't have a lot of extra money because of the cost of health care insurance (who says we don't need reform??) but we're having a great time enjoying our family, each other and our property.
We'll splurge this summer for our 30th Anniversary and take a trip but we're realizing it's just so much fun to be together doing the things we love.
You're going to love it too, I bet.

Congratulations and best of luck on your retirement! I've been retired for three years..easier to eat well, harder to get needed exercise. I finally had to make the latter part of a daily routine M-F to make it work for me. You'll find your mode. Warmest Congrats on your son receiving his doctorate! Sounds like a busy mon th!
