Progress.... It comes in different ways

Progress, it comes in different ways. Sometimes you can see it on the weight scale when you lose a few pounds from the last time. Sometimes it is when you see a friend whom you haven't seen in a while and they ask you if you have lost weight. Sometimes you see it when you try on those pants that didn't quite fit before and now they do. Progress can be found in may different areas of your life. I remember walking up a flight of stairs used to cause me to be winded, now I can bound up the stairs and not feel a thing.

However, sometimes progress is seen when you revisit an old goal you forgot about and left behind. That is what my post is about today.

In the fall of 2010 when I found out I was diabetic, I started thinking about ways I would enjoy exercising. Then I plotted out a four and a half mile loop around my house to ride my bike. The first time I rode that loop it took me forty minutes or so to complete. My goal was to get it down to thirty minutes so I could ride it before I went to work every morning. However, that plan never materialized. I am not sure why exactly now, it might have been the weather or the time change or something else, but I never did get into the habit of riding my bike every morning before work. Sure, I did it a few times but not like I had planned. The last time I rode that loop in the morning I remember my time was thirty-five minutes so I shaved five minutes off but I still wasn't at my goal.

Winter came and I found other ways to exercise, like walking during my lunch hour. This seemed to work for me and I forgot about riding my bike in the morning. Time pasted and I didn't think about it anymore.

Today I woke up, and for some reason, I decided to go for a ride on my bike. I started the loop and quickly shifted into the highest gear my bike has and headed down the road. I kept peddling, not wanting to coast or slow down, the rush of the wind going by felt great. The first traffic light I came to was green as if to wish me well on my journey, no need to slow down or stop, just keep going. I made the turn, put my head down and kept peddling. I hit the first of four steep hills on my loop and had to down shift to the middle gears but I never stopped peddling, all the way to the top. Then shift again and head down and back up again, once again going to the middle gears to make it up the second hill. About this time I hit the second turn and about the mid-way point in my loop. I looked at my watch and realized I had only be on my bike for about seven minutes! At that point I remembered my old goal of completing this loop in thirty minutes and felt great to know I was almost half way in just seven minutes. So, I kept peddling back to the highest gear I had only down shifting on the two remaining hills. The second traffic light was green as well when I approached so I was able to keep going and make my final turn. I arrived back at my starting location in exactly fifteen minutes from when I left. I had not only achieved that long lost and forgotten goal I had set for myself so many months ago, I had cut it in half. Now, that's PROGRESS!
