30 days of music in one compact survey/blog

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

I'm feeling like an overachiever. I think I'm going to do this all in one day.

day 01 - your favorite song
According to iTunes my favorite (most played) song is "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z. I don't know if I agree with that. My "favorite" song changes all the time.

day 02 - your least favorite song
Probably "Heartless" by Kanye. I used to really like it but now it's associated with bad memories and a terrible relationship.

day 03 - a song that makes you happy
I think it's called "The Happy Song" (if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands...). Every time my sister puts it on my niece instantly smiles and sings along. Her smile is infectious and it's hard not to feel happy when the song is singing about being happy. =)

day 04 - a song that makes you sad
"Lean on Me" always makes me sad. I was in a choir in high school and we sang this song at my friend's funeral. Makes me sad every time.

day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone
"So Whatcha Want" by the Beastie Boys used to be the ringtone for Jim. He was someone I was in love with for three years before things fizzled out. I still think of him every time the song plays and it makes me smile.

day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere
"Feeling on Yo' Booty" by R Kelly reminds me of being on the beach in San Diego. My friends and were playing that song and laughing and dancing. Good times.

day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event
"Thriller" by Michael Jackson reminds me of my sister's wedding. We all did the Thriller dance. It was the best!

day 08 - a song that you know all the words to
I know all the words to lots of songs. It's kind of a gift. One of my favorite karaoke songs to do is "Do Me" by Bell Biv Devoe. It's a ridiculous song and it always impresses people that I sing it without even reading the words.

day 09 - a song that you can dance to
One of my favorite songs to dance to would be "Ready for the Floor" by Hot Chip. Everyone goes crazy when they play that at their shows.

day 10 - a song that makes you fall asleep
"Asleep" by The Smiths. It's pretty obvious why it works. Sometimes I sing it to myself when I'm suffering from insomnia. "Sing me to sleep, sing me to sleep. I'm tired and I, I want to go to bed..."

day 11 - a song from your favorite band
I'm a music freak and have loads of favorite bands. My newest favorite is Holy Ghost! and one of their best songs is "Hold My Breath." I love it.

day 12 - a song from a band you hate
I despise Nickelback. I had to Google them to find the name of one of their songs (fun fact: when you Google Nickelback it autoformulates terrible things about the band and their music). I'm going to say "Someday" from Nickelback for this one. Someday they'll stop producing music. I hope.

day 13 - a song that is a guilty pleasure
"Since You've Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson. I used to hide the fact that I liked her by labeling the blank CD with her album as just "K.C."

day 14 - a song that no one would expect you to love
I think people that know me, know my love of all kinds of music. Maybe they'd be surprised that I love "November Rain" by Guns 'n' Roses.

day 15 - a song that describes you
For the longest time the song that seemed to describe me was "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" by Morrissey. It's a really sad song about a girl that meant nothing to someone she cared about. I don't really identify with that anymore. My anthem for awhile was "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson. I was proud of myself for the strength it took to uproot my life in CA and move to NYC without really knowing anyone out here.

day 16 - a song that you used to love but now hate
I can't think of an answer to this one. I might get tired of songs because I've overplayed them but I don't think I hate any of them.

day 17 - a song that you hear often on the radio
I don't listen to the radio.

day 18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio
Same as my answer above.

day 19 - a song from your favorite album
"I Feel Better" from Hot Chip's One Life Stand album. It really does make me feel better when I listen to it. And the video is fantastic. It's a spoof on boy bands. And they get killed by monsters in the end. Pretty great.

day 20 - a song that you listen to when you're angry
I think that would be the "Power" remix by Kanye. I don't get angry often but when I'm working out, that song pushes me to go faster and further.

day 21 - a song that you listen to when you're happy
"Say My Name" by Holy Ghost! There's this part where it makes me want to just dance. Or I also love pretty much any song by Muse. "Sunburn" makes me really happy, as does "Hysteria."

day 22 - a song that you listen to when you're sad
"I Know it's Over" by The Smiths. It's pretty sad and listening to it perpetuates my sad feelings.

day 23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding
"Poison" by Bell Biv Devoe so my brother and sister can get into a dance competition like we did when we were kids.

day 24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
Do they really play songs at funerals? Isn't it usually hymns and stuff? I asked my co-worker for ideas on this one and she suggested one of our favorite songs by Beyonce called "Why Don't You Love Me?" Ha ha

day 25 - a song that makes you laugh
Actually I should have answered the Beyonce song for this one. Every time we play it at work we sing along and do this part that B does in the video where she grabs her boobs. We laugh every time.

day 26 - a song that you can play on an instrument
The only instrument I can play is the clarinet and I haven't touched it since 7th grade. The only song I remember playing is "Making Muffins," a rip-off of "Three Blind Mice."

day 27 - a song that you wish you could play
I'm going to say "Under the Bridge" only because my first love played this for me on the guitar the first night we hung out. It has special memories.

day 28 - a song that makes you feel guilty
Why would a song make me feel guilty? I didn't do anything wrong. I'm an angel. =)

day 29 - a song from your childhood
"Hold On" by Wilson Phillips. That was the best moment when they played it during Bridesmaids. It brought me back and I was reminded of sitting in my room listening to that tape over and over.

day 30 - your favorite song at this time last year
Well, I think the answer to "day 30" is the same as "day 1": "Empire State of Mind." It had only been out for a bit at this time last year. June-something marks the one-year anniversary of seeing Jay-Z (and Eminem) perform on the roof of the David Letterman studio in an intimate show. That was one of the best days of my life.

Hope all is well with you ... tuck those sad and lonesome memories back where they came from and look onward and upward! You are on the move, my friend ... Nothing can stop you now! emoticon
