Thyroid Blues

Monday, May 23, 2011

Hello Everyone,

Well, I'm still on vacation from school but back to work again. I am greatly enjoying my freedom from studying for a bit longer (school starts on May 31st). We were able to get away on a trip to Cayo Costa State Park which is on a barrier island off the coast of Ft. Meyer's in Florida. We stayed in a primitive cabin and had a great time-even my parents were able to come. My daughter brought a friend so even she was able to enjoy it. For me I just enjoyed the peacefullness of the island, walks on the beach, and the ability to get out on a kayak with my hubby. We even found a small inlet where several Manatees were hanging out. We got lucky and they decided to come visit and let me rub their bellies :) . Here is a pic of the inital Manatee encounter:

I've been busy working on organizing my house a bit and doing some cleaning, but most importantly working on scholarship applications to help decrease how much in the way of student loans I'll need for this coming year.

The main challenge for me is trying to cope with the ups and downs of my erratic thyroid gland. The most recent battles have been because my dose of Synthroid was all of a sudden way too high-left me unable to sleep, hungry all the time, anxious, experiencing palpitations, etc. I ended up gaining five pounds back as my usual rule of to eat only when hungry wasn't working-as I was always hungry...and I mean HUNGRY. I am now on a lower dosage and on the name brand of the medication-feeling much better now that I can sleep, but also feeling much more tired.

So, since I can't count on my body to tell me when to eat, I'm back to tracking my foods. It's good for me, as I had gotten into the habit of snacking on sweets that were brought into work-not bad occasionally, but I got into the habit of eating them every day at work since I was so hungry. I plan to track my food every day (or at least most days) for the next month or so, or until my weight is back down to 132.

I have started eating healthier meals at work-packing my breakfast and lunch and remembering to bring healthy snacks. Now I just need to stay away from the sweets at work and keep an eye on my overall daily intake :)

Here's a pic from Mother's day of my mom, my sister and I:

Seems to peaceful where you are.
    Good luck on starting again.

I've been taking meds for my thyroid for 17 years now.
I am obviously very uninformed about how the thyroid affects so many aspects on my health. The only indication I have ever visibly noticed is being tired. I didn't realize it also contributes to eating! I just figured I like to eat.
I have a dr appt on Wednesday. I am going to ask him to check my thyroid.
    Thanks for blogging!
    Enjoy the manatees! Love them!
