So as many of my SP friends know, due to OA in my right knee and months of physical therapy, I have mostly been able to just do walking for my workouts. Well, last night, I noticed a little pain in the front of my left knee just below the knee cap. I knew that I had not hurt it, and it was really just my body telling me that I had already walked close to 10.5 miles (as of Wed) and it was time for a rest or a different exercise. I have everything mapped out, and my rest day is Sunday, so I decided that if I couldn't find any low impact knee exercises in my dvd collection or elsewhere, I would just switch rest days.
Most of my friends also know that once upon a time, I lived for kickboxing and ballroom dancing. I love, love, love those exercises, but most of them are higher impact on the knee. You need a good knee to do things properly. My knee itself is feeling awesome, especially since I have lost 13 pounds so far in my journey. So I decided that I would search for some kickboxing online.
What I haven't learned much yet, is there is a lady (aka Coach Nicole) that has a bunch of different 10 minute exercise videos online on SP. And guess what? I found one for kickboxing. I watched it first to see if I would even be able to do it. I knew I couldn't do the jumping jacks, which was about the only thing I would have problems with, but she showed a lower impact version of them. I decided to add that to my exercise for the day. Now, I also have tons of ballroom dancing dvds. Someday I would love to get Julianne Hough's, but for now, I have DWTS Cardio Dance and Core Rhythms. I knew CR was out because it was way to high impact for me, but I thought I could do a few of the DWTS dances, excluding the Jive for obvious reasons
and the challenge at the end.
So I started with the kickboxing video, and it went super fast. That's why I love this stuff. When I'm on the treadmill for an hour it feels like three. Ten minutes of kickboxing? It's over it a shot. Everything went awesome, so I threw in my DWTS dvd, was easily able to do the warm up, Maksim Chmerkovskiy's Paso, attempted to do the Cha Cha, but I just don't care much for the instructor as she doesn't explain it, flailed through the samba (lots of fun, but all I could do was laugh at myself)
and finished with the cool down. 30 minutes went by super fast.
Now granted, it wasn't pretty. I haven't done any dancing for a long time, but I kept moving. FYI: there are very few exercises out there that works your abs like ballroom dancing moves. You can lose inches fast, but you have to be careful and keep your stomach tight.
My knee feels good, and I am deliriously happy about all of it. I needed a change. I think I am going to start doing this maybe once every couple weeks, then once a week, so my body can get a change, and I can have much more fun, because I just love it. Once I lose more weight, I plan on adding in Core Rhythms again and maybe buying Julianne's dance video-I was watching some of it online last night, and she really explains it awesome.
So that was my fitness today...I finally reached one of my huge goals!
