Excited About New Menu Options in Town!!
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
Today something neat happened in my small community (population approx. 2,000) . In conjunction with our county public health office, five of the area restaurants each developed several new healthy menu choices. All of the recipes were reviewed by a registered dietician and confirmed to be 550 calories or less and within the 2010 dietary guidelines. Between 11:00 and 1:00 today, you could go to the restaurants and get free samples of each of their potential new healthy menu options, then vote on your favorites and complete a survey on which items you liked and would order if they add them to their menus. Unfortunately, I only had time to get to one of the establishments, which is located right next door to my office. They offered the following:
Bacon Cheeseburger Wrap
Turkey Dijon Wrap
Grilled Turkey Dijon Melt
BLT with Turkey Bacon
Old Italy Grilled Cheese
Teriyaki Chicken & Strawberry Salad
Berry Blend Yogurt Parfait
I thought they were all very good. The parfait was less than 100 calories and would make a great side dish or dessert (vanilla yogurt, berries and granola). The Old Italy grilled cheese was surprisingly good, made with some type of grainy bread with a flavoring that might have been dill. The wraps were both made with whole wheat wraps.
I wish I’d had a chance to get to the other four places to sample what they were offering and vote on my favorites. I’m excited that our local restaurants have taken this step to work with public health to bring healthy options to their menus. Now if I can just refrain from saying “and I’ll have fries with that…..."
