A time to be born, and a time to die

Thursday, May 12, 2011

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time for war,
And a time for peace.

These verses in Ecclesiastes 3 have given me such peace this week. EVERY thing that happens in life is in its season. I can't question God in this. We are His creation, and though we have our own free, due to sin, we all will die.

This week has been sad. Yes, because our family lost a loved one, but more so because he was so young. Five years younger than me. Ralph Hicks was diagnosed with leukemia about 3-4 years ago and only a little more than year ago had a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, infections of ALL kind seem to haunt his body. In the midst of this, his mother passed away two months after the transplant. Due to having to be in a sterile environment, he couldn't attend her funeral. He constantly was at home, in the hospital or rehab.

Saturday his temp went up to 106 degrees and they couldn't get it down for over 24 hours and his heart rate went up over 150 for just as long. This infection was just too strong for him and his time on this earth has ended. But the greater joy is where his final destination is! To be in the everlasting presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Wow!

So even though it's a time to mourn and weep, there IS joy in the morning!

Thank ALL OF YOU for your prayers! I can't even put into words what your friendships mean to me and to know that you are taking time out of your busy day to pray for our family is SUCH a BLESSING and COMFORT! God is really SO good! His lovingkindness endures FOREVER!

    Tambi, this is SO sad indeed! I often think about the 'sting of death' and how the LORD never meant for this to be our lot--were it not for the fall of man we would have lived blissfully and eternally without tears, suffering or pain. But sin has interrupted that for a season, and praise GOD only for a season since He reconciled us to Him through Jesus. Now Ralph is restored indeed, but the sting is for those who must wait to be reunited. Sending prayers of comfort and peace, my dearest friend.

    So sorry for your loss. Your post really touched me. I really appreciated it because I do believe there is a continuum in life. If there is good, there has to be bad; if there wasn't, we wouldn't be able to understand what good was. We would take it for granted and never truly appreciate what is good. Take time to appreciate Ralph's life. Everything he gave, how many people he touched, and how you have been affected because he was alive; remember the good. I know my life is blessed because you have touched it :)

    Keep smiling!

    Thank you for sharing something so personal with us. What a wonderful testimony of your faith, and Ralph's faith. Most of all what a beautiful testimony for our Lord, the "Promise Keeper", who has given us hope.

    We may never fully comprehend why God finds it necessary to "cut short" the time on earth for one so young, but PRAISE GOD that He is now welcoming home your family member and will use this experience to accomplish His will on earth.

    I'm so sorry my friend! It's especially hard to understand the reason when someone passes in a way such as this. Obviously this family has made quite an impression on the world around them though. Perhaps that is the answer! My heart goes out to you and your family as well as the family of your dear friend and his mother.

    Oh, man. Life on this earth is so fleeting. I'm so glad there is the everlasting... emoticon emoticon
