Caution: Venting blog regarding my half marathon.....

Thursday, May 05, 2011

This is probably going to be one of my worst birthday's ever. It started out good and I was in a good mood but all that changed from one little email.

I received an email this morning stating that my half marathon, the one I have been looking forward to for months, has been cancelled. The park were the half was to be run is still closed due to flooding. I knew that this could be a possibility but with my half still weeks away I thought for sure it would be alright for running. If not, they would just change the course then, right. I was..... WRONG!

So all my excitement, my training, my anticipation about this day May 21 is all shot down. It was a huge blow for me this morning and brought my mood from happy to sad, disappointed, frustrated, angry, you name it.

This half marathon was very special race for me. It was not only my first half but my wedding anniversary weekend and my hubby was running it with me. (This is his first half too.) This half marathon was going to symbolize everything that I have worked towards. From re-learning how to run to working up to long distances. It was going to be my time to prove how far I have come with my running.

My friend that is running with me is equally upset. We both have been working so hard for this half marathon. We know that we can do it. We proved this past weekend with running 13 miles. We didn't go the full 13.1 because we were saving it for our race. But we have trained together for months.... preparing for this special day.

We will run on May 21 either way. But the thing about it is that we won't have the race adrenaline, the crowd of cheering people, and the race bib (which I do collect).

I know that there are other half marathons out there. But for today, I am not in the mood to even look at any. Sorry this is such a depressing blog..... especially after my happy blogs the past few days. I am just so disappointed........

I do have to end it on a good note.... something positive has to be written!

My daughter and I went for our bike ride yesterday afternoon. (My boys opted not to go.) I wore my Garmin watch to see exactly how far we would go and for the MPH we were biking. It was a slow ride, we ranged between 5 - 12 MPH. But we went 7.14 miles and my daughter made it the whole way! I was very proud for her making it this far. With the slow pace it took us 1:10 but she made it!

I have ther similliar situation this week. 3th May it was short race in my city (it's small city so we have only one race a year and I realy antipicated it this year). This morning in the middle of the spring with green trees and flower everywhere, felt snow. A lot of snow hehe, but I wear my running clothes and went to the start place, Than I red message - the race is canceled du to the bad weather. Buuuuuuuu.. chickens..... :)))

Ugh, so sorry to hear that--I would be majorly bummed, too! Hopefully you can find another nearby and close to that date, if not on it, to do instead; you have worked too hard to not do the distance in a race and get the medal. How cool that your husband is doing this with you, though, and the bike ride sounds great!

Totally with you on the disappointment, it something you were using as additional affirmation and a reward for ALL your training and to be able to celebrate and do it with DH would have been pretty perfect. So sorry!
on the good side, you are fitter and capable of doing the distance, and you have inspired the entire family, and had a good bike ride with DD, so shake it off and look for the next HM to sign up for and GO FOR IT!

That would make me sad too. I hope that you don't get discouraged and that you continue to train for a future one. Remember, you have come so far!

That is a bummer and I can understand being upset, but turn it around. Map out a 13.1 mile run on that day and just do it!! Don't throw all of your hard work and training down the drain. You can still accomplish the run without it being a "race".

Unfortunately we cannot control Mother Nature.

Complete bummer! Ugh. But, since the date is special for you, maybe try halfmarathons.net to look for others on that day? Maybe you have to travel, but make a weekend out of it? Many of the smaller races don't sell out, hopefully you can find a "replacement."

But, if not, run another one this summer and shoot for an anniversary MARATHON next year!

Sorry to hear about the half! That is a total bummer, I hope you can find a way to celebrate what you have accomplished through your training and getting this far even without the crowd and race atmosphere. They cannot take away all of the training, prep and good stuff you have already done to get this far!

Sorry you got some disappointing news : ( but the fact that the race was cancelled does not affect how far you have come and the goals that you have reached! Congratulations on your amazing acheivements! emoticon

Wow. I bet you are disappointed. I can only imagine!
That weekend is my wedding anniversary, too! The ride with your daughter sounds fun. My son is 3 1/2 and refuses to try his tricycle. I love riding my bike and I struggle with how to motivate him to ride. They have "bike day" every Tuessday at preschool, but he's content to go play elsewhere while the rest of the kids ride. Bummer.

I was thinking while reading your blog, do it anyway! Sure it won't be the same as the actual race, but you know what make it your own. Come up with a name for it too! Make it your own personal celebration! emoticon

You all have worked too hard to not do a marathon. So keep training & get a name in place for your race and I can't wait to hear all about it!

Go get it, Elaine! emoticon emoticon

I understand your pain. But look around maybe there is one in a close by city or state.
