Hot Yoga: My Step #1

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

I'm finally, finally, FINALLY at my half way mark. Wow!!! Only took me almost a year and a half...lol. I'm telling you...everyone has their own pace, but me... with too many "up-and-down" scale moments to count, I might be the Slowest Loser of all time. ha...

BUT... I've finally gotten here.

SPECIAL THANKS: To FRUITYCHERRY who showed me the Eat To Live diddy. Check it out, check her out. Julia is awesome-sauce. And clean eating people, clean eating. Been practically sugar free for 6 weeks now, and the weight just drops off. On top of that, my run training has inspired the athlete in me, and my body and shape hasn't been the same since. BMI dropping out of sight.

Anyway...

So when I lived back in Brooklyn, sometime in '07, I met author/editor Carol Taylor.

Is she gorgeous or what? And she was petite, toned and tight. In private, I asked her, "what in the world do you do to have this body?!?" And she said, the only thing she did was eat right and do Hot Yoga 1-2x a week. Nothing else. I was flabbergasted. And I tell ya... right then and there, all my gears were set into motion, because I wanted to "do the deal" just - like - that.

So at the genesis of my millionth time "re-starting my diet" (you all know what I'm talking about), back in '09, I said that I really want to be a Hot Yoga Chic like Ms. Taylor was (and I'm sure still is). Meaning, a sexy chic female with sculpted, sultry muscles and definition, plus stengthened flexibility and glowing with a peaceful spirit, all because of the amazing workout and mind-body-spirit center of Hot Yoga aka Bikram Yoga (or vice versa).

But at the time (around 206 lbs) I felt too big, and very self-conscious about bending and twisting and stretching and spilling out of my clothes, etc, if you catch my drift, lol. So I set a goal that once I reach 170 pounds, a little over my half-way mark, this would be my reward. And guess what? Last time I checked, I was 5 pounds from that goal weight!!! Yes! So I already located a hot yoga studio a couple of minutes away, and I just bought a simple yoga outfit (black with orange-y stripes) and a yoga mat.

The yoga mat I found ($10, TJMaxx) is my absolute favorite color in the whole world. The color of the deep sea off Jamaica. A deep, rich turquoise. So finding it made the whole fun of that even better.

So before the hot yoga, I'm going to delve into a few regular yoga classes first which are offered for free at my gym. So I'm hoping to basically just get my feet wet, before being doused by the heat of hot yoga, lol. My first class (if I can swing it after work!) is tomorrow evening. Wish me luck. To all my yogies out there, any tips appreciated! (:D)

So, little by little people.... it happens. This is my Hot Yoga Chic journey............. Step #1.

Bless. emoticon

I've always heard that the slower you take it off, the more likely it is you will actually keep it off. Slower is better!

As far as yoga, from the little I've done, I have learned to not judge or push myself. It's about stretching myself (literally AND figuratively) just a little more each time. Accept where you are and enjoy the process.

Good luck! Just keep an open mind and enjoy! And sometimes it takes going to different classes and trying different teachers before you find one who clicks for you. But yoga is the best!

I go to astunga yoga. I've never had a chance to try bikrium because I don't think it's offered in my neck of the woods. But my girl DYA did it for 30 consecutive days and had some really great benefits. I love astunga. It starts out kind of fast just to get the body warmed up but ends very slow. Remember to breath from your bungda. Good luck and Namaste! emoticon
