I spent the entire weekend in Fresno attending a beauty pageant for my daughter, Jenny. She is 9 years old and hooked on watching Toddlers and Tiaras and really, really, really wanted to do a beauty pageant. What's a mother to do??
The first round is the beauty round. You wear a beauty dress and there are certain expectations, like the white shoes, ruffled socks, the cupcake skirt, lots of makeup, french manicure, being very tanned, and teased hair. Jenny scored very very well in this part of the competition.
Next is the theme-wear. The theme of this pageant was "Welcome to the Jungle" so all of the clothes were animal prints. We had this outfit custom made by a friend based on one we saw online. She did OK in this part, but could have done better with her routine.
After this, we have "outfit of choice". Jenny actually won this part. We shopped for the outfit at the mall (except for the pettiskirt) and got each pieve from a different store. I love the colors red, white, and black, so I loved this outfit!
The last part is talent. Jenny was in a dance competition a few months ago (dancing is her passion) so we already had a routine and costume. There were only 4 routines and she was the best, but did not win. We think she was cheated.
But I guess all moms think that when their child doesn't win?
Finally, it was time for crowning. That's when they announce the winners. Unfortunately, Jenny did not win. There were only 2 girls in her category and she didn't win!!! She was so upset that she left the room crying and I Had to go console her and tell her I thought she was the best.
All in all, we spent a whole weekend doing this, spent tons of money, and came home with next to nothing. But Jenny loved it and wants to do it again. Sigh. What's a mother to do?!?!
