Sitting is worse than might think, it may kill you, even if you exercise.

Monday, April 25, 2011

Today on NPR a story was ran with with the title:

'Sitting is worse than you might think'

I've included the link below. New research indicates that even if you exercise, sitting around (watching tv, being on the computer, being at work, driving, even eating) makes you substantially more likely to die! The big muscles need to move (the ones in your hands do not count), every hour! Our bodies aren't designed to sit around, it shuts down.At least a few minutes of moving around every hour is recommended, even if you just wiggle or take a few steps back and forth. This can lower your blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol, and waist size. An exercise ball at your desk is recommended if you sit all day at work. Move or you may not be around very long to have the choice. Let's enjoy our world, not get glued to a chair, in a box looking at a box. Sedentary living is the downfall of a developed nation. The more I sit, the less I want to move. That's because it causes our metabolisms to take a dive. Sometimes I have to force myself to get moving, even if it hurts. I always feel better. I can think better (more oxygen to the brain), I even get motivated to do more, then I don't want to sit down when I need to! It's those first steps.... Get out of the boxes, breathe the fresh air, live, live, LIVE!

I agree with the research 150%. Unfortunately, I do have a desk job, even though I'm pretty active. My body FEELS much better if I get up and move around fairly frequently, such as every hour. I even try to do some stretching a couple of time a day at my desk.

    Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic blog and it certainly makes me think. I agree with you about sitting more and moving less seem to effect me the same way. It is a if my body goes into shut down and it is harder to move again.
    Love Kerrie emoticon
