July 2010 Chicago LATE Ride

Thursday, April 21, 2011

I was so ashamed of my size that I didn't have the courage to upload this video at the time it was made. I weighed about 290 pounds, which was 60 pounds down from my heaviest. I was participating in Chicago's LATE ride, which starts at midnight at the downtown lakefront. The 25-mile tour takes cyclists through various Chicago neighborhoods.

The trike is a Sidewinder Z recumbent. I drove to Ohio to buy it used from Craigslist for $500; new, it's about $1800. The great thing about the trike is you can ride it for hours. Some people think recumbents don't offer much of a workout, but that's false; you use your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles extensively. However, even at a good pace, I only average between 8-10 miles per hour (the trike weighs 45 pounds!). I still have it, but I think I might sell it and buy a regular bicycle.

I hear you. But you know what? You weren't home, sitting on the sofa, munching chips, were you? No - so that's awesome! Good for you for getting out of your comfort zone and doing something so cool!

Very cool! I've seen some people on those on the trails around the city I live in. Thanks for sharing it with us! Did it take some getting used to being so low to the ground with the other cyclists up high? Are you selling it because you are ready for a different work out or bored? Just curious. Think I will drag my bicycle out of the shed tomorrow. I haven't even seen it since we moved in this house 7 years ago! Ugh! Time to get it tuned up and put it to use.
