Our Local Green Food Box Program

Last night, when I went to bed the weather forecast was saying that we could expect extremely cold temperatures for this time of year, high winds, rain, ice pellets and a possibility of snow. So, when I went to bed I had an uneasy feeling about how the start of my Wednesday work day would be.
I woke up this morning before the alarm clock to the sound of wind howling and rain pelting on the bedroom window. I got up, grabbed my clothes and headed for the shower, trying not to look out at the weather. During breakfast the weather man informed us that we hadn’t really experienced any freezing rain or ice pellets, but there was still a possibility that we would. I looked outdoors and confirmed that all that was happening were the high winds and rain. I could handle that.
The day may be blustery and cold. I may not be able to go for my 15 minute walk break at lunchtime, but I can tolerate all of this because my Green Food Box will arrive today! The Health Unit in the town where I live sponsors a Green Food Box program. What this is, is for $10 or $15 you receive a box of fruits and vegetables. They try to add locally grown items to the boxes as often as possible and always include something that is unusual, along with recipes and ideas on how to use the products. The people who participate in this program where I work have compared Green Food Box day to Christmas morning – you never know what you’ll get and just the mystery of this leaves you with a sense of excitement. This month my son and daughter have decided to try a box for themselves, even though they live 77 km away. My daughter, after she decided to purchase a box said “Wonder what I’ll get” – guess the sense of excitement has gotten to her too!
If the community where you live participates in a program similar to this, I would suggest you try it out. You will be amazed at the quality and value you will receive. And you’ll find that the assortment of fruits and vegetables will allow you to ‘mix up’ your menus.
