Is overweight a personality problem?

Sunday, April 17, 2011

I hear the same despair & frustration over and over again from people trying to loe weight. Why can't Istop eating so much? I went on a binge again...blah, blah, blah....People are desperate to lose weight and are in fact quite successful at losing it. Maintaining the weight loss is the difficult part. They lose it, gain it, beat themselves up about it...over and over again. It is heartbreaking. Unfortunately counting calories consumed and calories burned is only one (small) part of the equation.

The part that most fail to understand is that the eat excessively because life is too difficult for them. They are afraid. They are anxious. They use food as a way of coping with (or avoiding) feelings that they cannot bring themselves to face. What most fail to realize is that their "hunger" is not physical but rather it is emotional. They usef food for comfort and relief from tensions of emotional deprivation or for pleasure that would ordinarily be derived from other pleausures. You've got to uncover and be willing to face your fears. It is scary but it's not any more scary that contining to live the rest of your life on this roller coaster of misery.

They key to overcoming the struggle once and for all is to stop being afraid. Stop being a doormat and stand up for yourself. Say no instead of saying yes and being a people pleaser all the time. Speak up when you have an opinion to share. Eat at the table like someone who deserves to enjoy a delicious, nutritious meal. Stop hiding and start participating in your life. Get rid of the negativity in your life and in your own head. Start complimenting yourself for all the amazing qualities that make you unique and someone to be valued. Take some time for yourself everyday. If you can't find 30 minutes or an hour then your life is out of control. and it's time to seriously evaluate your priorities. You should be number one and you should not feel guilty about it. This is YOUR life so start living it like you matter because you do matter! SparkPeople's slogan is to "Make your life an adventure". Do it. Now. If you don't you will never end this struggle.
