How we perceive things.

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Isn’t it amazing how our mind’s work. Every day, we all move through the moments of our lives. And you can bet, that at the end of the day, when you find the time to sit quietly and sort through all your experiences of the day, your perception of all the moments of that day will be different from the people who shared them with you. Whether the people who shared your day are co-workers, family or friends, we all view and remember these moments differently.

And you can also be certain, that the person you see reflected in the mirror probably doesn’t look anything like the person your friends, co-workers and family members see. We need to keep this in mind every day – whether we’re rehashing what we should have done, said or did or how we look in the mirror. Personal perception can distort things…. And its usually safe to say that we exaggerate things, and not in our favour, a lot of the time. So next time you consider how your day went, or what you see in the mirror, try to keep this in mind.

I fall victim to that quite often. I may get a "OMG you lost a TON of weight" and then look in the mirror some days and I "see" someone who is looking trim and thin - and I take it as license to overindulge :( Then I look in the mirror the next day and I see what has always been there, minus the colorings of comments from others. And I realize that I need to stay on track.
