Saturday's Hail Storm

Saturday, April 09, 2011

This afternoon, I was talking to a friend on the phone,
when I heard a sound as though someone had thrown
a rock at one of our windows. It really frightened me!
I told my friend about it, she stated that it was hailing
where she lives. She lives about 12 miles from me.

Then I heard something hitting the top of our house,
that was so loud, it was deafening. I could no longer
hear my friend speak, so I hung the phone up.

When I looked outside, I saw something that neither
me nor my husband has ever seen before. Large hail
stones were coming down & quickly covered the lawn
and roadways. The stones were the size of tennis
balls to baseball size! It kept coming down for at
least 10 minutes!

My husband reached out on a step and picked up one
of the stones. It was near the size of a baseball. It
is the one that I am holding in my hand, in the picture

It was two hours before we were able to get out to see
the damage to our house. We have vinyl siding on our
house. On one end of the house was extensive damage.
Holes all over. All the vents on top of the house are
flattened, gutters damaged. All of my flowers destroyed.
We have a carport with a steel roof, that has dents all
over. As far as we can tell, there is no damage to the
shingles on the house nor on our garage. I want go into
details of other damage as well.

There are many reports of car windows and sunroofs
completely broken out and of course, the cars are
dented all over. Neither of our vehicles were damaged.
I am sure that there is wide-spread damage all over
our area in Kentucky.

I hope to never see another hail storm like this again,
in my life time. It was a very scary thing to go through.
I think it could have killed a person, or caused them
severe physical injuries.

I am sorry to hear of the damage. I am glad you are safe. I remember living in LA and there being a similar hailstorm there that really damaged a lot of cars.

I bet that was scary!!! The size of that hail is amazing. I'm sorry to hear about all your damage. Even small hail can cause a lot of damage....I can't imagine what hail that size can do.

Holy cow. I have never seen hail anywhere close to that size. So sorry about the damages. Call your insurance folks right away as I am sure all of your neighbors will be doing the same thing. We had major rain that made driving almost impossible to see. Thank goodness no hail. I am glad that you all were not hurt. emoticon

Barbara, you do look great! I heard about the storms; luckily we didn't get hit in Lexington! I'd get someone up on your roof to inspect the shingles closely; we had a LOT of roofs replaced in Lexington a couple of years ago after a storm that wasn't even close to being as severe as that! I hope getting the repairs done isn't a hassle. I'm so glad you were snug at home! Great picture! Hugs.

Great picture of you and your giant snowflake. Every farmers nightmare. Dad talked about golf ball size hail flattening their wheat and corn crops in Kansas, but you definitely have a baseball. Hope your insurance will take care of the damage to your house and yard. I am glad you and your cars were safe.

Sorry to hear about the terrible hail and all the damage it caused. Very relieved to hear that you are fine though along with your vehicles. I do hope you never have to go through that again. Try to have a good Sunday regardless. emoticon
