The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Monday, April 04, 2011

This past Wednesday, my brother-in-law, Bob, was killed by a 23 yo man in a pickup truck who dropped his cell phone and while retrieving it drifted into the bike lane.

This happened in Florida. Bob and my sister, Shelly, had driven from their home in Arizona and Shelly had dropped Bob off in Gainesville to do a 7-day bike tour Bike Florida. My sister continued on to South Florida where our parents live. Five days later, Bob was dead. I flew down on Friday and Shelly and I started back to Arizona stopping in Gainesville to pick up Bob's stuff including his helmet that is now missing a hunk in front and his horribly mangled bicycle.

Please, please concentrate on the road when you are driving - don't use a cell phone for talking or texting, don't eat. Don't do anything that will distract you while you drive.

Thank you!
