Mr. "No-Walk" 5K! :-)

Sunday, April 03, 2011

Got up and at 'em this morning, cycled down to Otsiningo, changed out of my sweats into shorts & T-shirt and nailed my first 5K!

Took it nice & easy...wrapped up in a blistering 40 mins...lol. But you know, this has been a goal of mine since news of Just a Short Run arrived: to jog a 5K without needing to stop and walk. Doesn't really matter the speed, just to know I can do it! Unfortunately due to financial considerations and costs of traveling I didn't join in the JASR fun down Pittsburgh way, but that doesn't mean I can't still nail that goal!

As usual I went into the run with a very cautious and skeptical frame of mind. Just like yesterday's bike ride, more holding back. At least I succeed in pushing myself into action nonetheless even though I get in my own way with this kind of thinking. I can't help but wonder what I might accomplish if I didn't downplay my capabilities so much...?

So, now that I know I can DO a 5K (in the privacy of my own run with only a few others along the trail as witnesses...lol) what's next?

Well another member of our local SparkTeam was hoping for another member to join her in the 5K run. Although we have others doing the 1/2 marathon, there haven't been others (that I'm aware of) doing the 5K. I've been dragging my feet long enough...I'm IN! :-)

Details about the run here:

Had some great tunes as usual helping me out...Springsteen's "57 Channels" with it's driving beat and Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream" and bunches of others. One artist I thought I'd mention is someone probably new to most of you: Luciana Souza. She has a marvelous album titled "Brazilian Duos" in which she sings with some of the BEST guitarists in Brazil. Romero Lubambo being my very favorite player. Many of the songs have such a light, festive sound...don't know a word of Portuguese, but I know what music makes my heart sing!

Here's a few links to check out:

A short clip, but you can see Lubambo just SINGING through his guitar:

Longer clip here:

And a full song here:

After the run I changed back into sweats & jacket and cycled the longer way home via the River Road loop which has steep uphill finale for some more standing climbs...shakier today after doing the 5K, but figure I gotta keep building those quads! :-)

Hope everyone had a SPARKIN' weekend! Mine continues into tomorrow morning as I'm flexing my Thurs. night rec time (saw the movie Limitless with my clients) and am taking tomorrow morning off to head to Riverwalk Athletic Center for an indoor workout since it's going to be a rainy day.

I am so SO grateful for this stunning weekend intro to SPRING!!

The. Incredible.Cycling.Machine! And now you're running too!!! And going public with it to boot!!! You're "too much for JEEEEEEEE-sus!" as they say in these here parts!
P.S. And you know my penchant for Brazilian music. Thanks for introducing me to Luciana Souza -- Chorinho Pra Ele is...well, outrageously good! WOW how she has honed her rarely beautiful instrument!!! And then, ahhhhhhhhhh, there is the gifted Romero Lubambo

emoticon on your 5K, Don! You must feel thrilled with yourself. emoticon
It makes me feel more 'normal' to hear that you still have to fight skepticism about your own capabilities after all you've achieved. Those mental battles just like to linger, I guess. Great job on getting your head in the game.

You would have truly enjoyed the fun at the JASR! However I think, no I KNOW, you are doing an awesome job!! I did my first walk/jog HM last Oct in 3hr 06min and thought that was pretty good. I was scheduled to do a HM at JASR too but had to back down to a 5K d/t back injury. It took a lot for me to sign up to do a race of any kind, but I am so glad I did. I am already looking forward to finding another one. There is a USAF race in Sept I would like to do and am hopeful my husband will get his act together to do it as well. It sounds like you had a great weekend of exercise and success. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

After running several 5Ks with walk breaks I found it took me longer the first time I ran without a walk break. In our long run we always walk a minute when the Garmin beeps for another mile. Went out and ran 8 with friends on Saturday but found it was just as hard to bike 8 yesterday. I seem to have problems with being in the right gear so my brother is convinced I need a computer for the bike. Running group is planning to do a 25 mile gears to beers ride at the end of the month but not sure I will be ready for it. The bike pro of the group says I can ride it if I am in shape to run a 1/2 but will just have a sore butt! Suzy

Don, congratulations for hitting another goal. Don't worry so much about you holding yourself back. It's clear that even though you may have the old conversations in your head, your still getting out there and doing lots of great stuff.

Just keep doing what your doing and when that damned annoying voice begins to speak just talk back and say "yeah yeah yeah, heard it all before, go back to sleep, I have stuff to do!!!"

I want to run a 5k just for the picture... just kidding. I do want to start running as a side thing. I don't see it as my main exercise...like hiking or biking some day. It is a good way to get in a good, quick cardio if you don't have time for a hike or bike ride.... well once you are able to run more than 30 seconds at a time.... you did it.... yeah. GOOD JOB.
