31 Days - March 30 & 31: Watch Your Portions; The 80/20 Rule; A Wrap Up

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Missed yesterday, so today I'll cover 2 days worth of Spark advice, and talk about this month's journey for me..

Sparks advice for the 30th day was:

Watch your
portions. While
big portions might keep
your wallet full, they'll
also add to your
waistline. Split large
entrees with a friend
and just say no to supersizing!

I don't think there is a single better piece of advice about making adjustments to our eating habits than to watch portion sizes. This advice has been out there for a long time, but I think it's likely that I, at least, haven't always paid much attention to it. And I think that is the biggest reason that in the past I have said I'm watching what I eat, I'm exercising, but the scale doesn't move. It's one thing to watch what you eat, it's quite another to watch HOW MUCH OF IT YOU EAT. I'm here to admit: lesson learned. And I am now paying attention, and it has brought success. I can only hope the success continues, and continues and continues.

Spark's last bit of advice for this month of creating a healthier diet is:

Live by the 80/20
rule. Eating
nutritious foods
80% of the time and
"fun" foods 20% of
the time is a healthy
goal. Like all things in
life, a healthy diet is
about balance and

Love this. While simple, I think it's hard to remember that this is not about "dieting." It's about adjusting our whole approach towards the way we eat, and about recognizing that moderation is the key. That the key is not to be on a "diet," lose the weight we want to, and then be off the "diet." Because that only leads right back to gaining the weight. It's about learning about healthy choices and eating habits, adopting them, and making them part of our healthy lifestyle, in conjunction with getting more activity in.

If we don't permanently change what made us unhealthy and overweight in the first place, then we will regain the weight. There really is nothing more to say about that. I'm not saying it's easy, but as someone who has lost and gained hundreds of pounds in her lifetime, I can say I know that is true. Only time will tell if I've learned the lesson well enough to live it in the future, but I do know that without those baby steps that lead to lifetime changes, the weight will not stay off. Period, end of story..

Tina's Wrap Up

I don't know if my sharing my thoughts through this last month's journey has helped anyone other than myself. But I think for me, it has kept my eye on the prize, so to speak, and reminded me of the good advice Spark has given us. I haven't agreed one hundred percent with it, but that doesn't mean it's wrong, it just means that my life's experiences have taught me what works for me.

If there is one thing I would encourage anyone to do, it is to be aware enough to know what works for you and what doesn't, and don't try to fit yourself into every bit of advice you read. There are round holes, square holes, triangular holes, and there are round pegs, square pegs, triangular pegs. Not every peg is going to fit into every hole. Don't try to force yourself to do things that don't work for you. Doesn't mean that you can do anything you want, but really, if it doesn't help you to meet your goals, find another way to do it, whatever it is. You know what works for you; if you don't, figure it out, and no matter the "expert" status of the advisor, if their advice doesn't help, move on. Just don't stop trying, and don't stop working.

I have lost 7 lbs this month. I have met virturally all of my exercise goals, and to the extent that I haven't, I've done a fairly good job of making up what I didn't do one day the next day. It's been a good month, and I hope it continues into next month. I hope you'll join me in continuing our journey to health, I love having you guys along with me!!

That was a great wrap up, with a great blog, and great results for you at the end. What a pay off!

My head is up my behind right now...
I am NOT exercising, I am watching portion control, I am so mad at myself. I am usually so much more selfdisciplined. I should at the very least be doing some cardio, with my family history, and my back exercises.... as I am getting the twinges again...

I am thinking about a fresh start during Holy Week, I'm off, and the weather should be better. Expecting more of myself with report cards and conferences looming doesn't seem sensible.

I'm glad you're doing so much better.

I've enjoyed your blogs each time and I appreciate you posting! I am really, really working the portion side of things now and I'm going to make it a way of life with no looking back! Thanks for the reminder and the suggestions.

Congrats on the 7 pounds!! Portion control is my biggest downfall and I struggle with it daily. I just get so tired of measuring and weighing. I do okay most of the time with "eyeballing" it, but I know with certain foods I should really pull out those measuring cups! As for the 80/20 theory, I love it! This is the longest that I have kept weight off that I have lost (even though I'm stuck now) and I know it's because I can allow myself that "treat" once in a while. Here's to a great April!!
