31 Days - March 27 & 28: Nonsugar Sweetening and Drink Your Milk!

Monday, March 28, 2011

Missed yesterday..in which Spark's tip was to:

without sugar.
Sugar and corn syrup
add calories to foods,
but have no nutritional
value. Buy syrup- and
sugar-free varieties of
fruit spread, applesauce,
juice, and canned fruits.
After all, fruit is naturally

I don't use a lot of sweetener, but when I do need to sweeten something like a cup of tea, if it's around I use some honey, but if not, I'll admit to using a teaspoon or so of sugar. A teaspoon of sugar is only 16 calories, and I'd just rather use the sugar than some chemical substitute. I don't drink a lot of regular tea where I need to sweeten it, or I might think differently about this. One other trick that I use is to use fruit, as Spark suggests. When I have time to make myself oatmeal in the morning, and I don't have time for that often, sadly, I'll mash up a banana and use its natural sweetness to enhance the oatmeal, throw in a little cinnamon and some chopped walnuts, and viola, the PERFECT breakfast.

I am not a naturally creative person. I have absolutely no talent as an artist, can't draw anything to save my life. I have found my "creative self" in the kitchen, and have found that if you use your imagination and think outside the box, you can come up with some pretty interesting and delicious ideas for cooking healthy and nutritious foods. If you've never experimented in the kitchen, go ahead and live dangerously and give it a try, I'll bet you'll love the results far more often than not!

Today, Spark tells us to:

Protect your
bones with
calcium. Aim for 3
servings of calcium-rich
foods daily, such as 1
cup milk, 1 cup yogurt
and 1-2 oz of cheese.
Non-dairy alternatives
that are fortified with
calcium also make good

I usually eat one serving of yogurt a day, and generally my morning or afternoon snack is a light cheese stick. So I generally get 2 calcium-rich foods a day, but the third is elusive to me, for some reason. I used to drink at least a glass of milk a day, and honestly don't know why I don't anymore. I do take a calcium supplement daily, and perhaps that means I'm doing okay with my calcium intake, but I'd always rather get the nutrition from the food and not from a supplement..

Have a Sparky day!!
