Vitamins, Supplements & Minerals- Oh My!

Friday, March 25, 2011

It's been a couple of days since my last blog. I was feeling really under the weather. I had a UTI (urinary tract infection) at the beginning of the week so my Dr. had put me on antibotics. They were a DOOZY and made me super dizzy and nauseous. I went back to the Dr. yesterday and I was having a reaction to them so he told me to stop. Today I am feeling MUCH better!

My blogs are really going to be heavy on vitamins/supplements & nutrition as these are my focus points.

Onto the good stuff. My aunt who is the most knowledgeable person I know about supplements & vitamins sent me a 4 page email with a bunch of advice and couldn't be more pleased at my new found information.

On top of my new, healthy diet are the vitamins/supplements I have started taking. I will continue to track my progress on here in hopes that I can help others with this amazing knowledge that I am obtaining along the way.

Iron- this is assisiting with my anemia. I have been taking iron supplements for about a month and while I'm still feeling quite exhausted- these have certainly made a difference. I am on a low dosage (35mg) and found that by taking 1 every other day has helped significantly. Everyone I talked to said that taking iron would constipate me but I have found these to gentle enough they haven't been a huge bother. A little bother but not as drastic as everyone made them out to be.

Probiotic- I've been taking a pro-biotic for about 2 years now. This helps lessen UTI's, yeast infections and helps with stomach digestion. I use the Life Brand Pro-biotic for women with cranberry. It is AMAZING!

Passion Flower- I went to see a naturopath about a year ago and she got me on these. They help greatly with anxiety. I HIGHLY recommend these after taking what seemed like a million different things (both natural & prescription). These work like a charm and you can even take up to 2 a day.

I have now begun taking a line from GNC called BE WHOLESOME. You get a multi pack of vitamins to take everyday (so it's super convenient). Here's what it has:

Multi Vitamin- Be Whole. It has vitamin C (which is good for immune and absorption of iron), Vitamin D (which is good for well being), Vitamin K (which a lot of multi's don't have- I was impressed to find this one had K!), B-12, Biotin...which are all things that were recommended to me by my nutritionist (aka aunt). There are tonnes of other vitamins & minerals in this one too. Just started this one so I will keep you up to date on how this one is working out. If you go to they list all of the ingredients on there. The other thing I love about this line is that there isn't a whole lot of filler in them either. They also have no wheat, gluten or yeast. If you want a good multi and don't want to go as crazy as I did- this one alone seems like a goody!

Be Beautiful which has Horsetail Rush Stems in them. This is to help with my hair loss. There is also Boron, Pantethine, MSM and much more. This has also significantly helped with my nail strength. I was develping deep grooves in my nails (an unfortunate side effect of alopecia) and these suppliments have really helped. I have been taking this one for just over a month on it's own. I would HIGHLY recommend this suppliement for anyone experiencing any issues with hair, skin or nails as a result of poor diet.

***As a side note, I am also seeing a Dermatologist for my alopecia and getting Triamcinolone injections in my scalp to promote hair growth on top of taking supplements. This has been incredibly successful. I have had 3 spots to date and 2 have grown in for the most part. I wanted to be clear that supplements will not fix this issue but are great to use along with Dr. treatments to assist hair growing more quickly and healthy.

Be Protected which has triple strength fish oil & omega 3 awesome for your heart & immune!

There is also Be Balanced a bone strenghening formula with calcium & D3 and Be Flexible to help with joint structure & function.

I probably won't take this crazy multi pack from GNC forever. Just until my body has regained strength. I will then pull out and continue to take what works for me but this is a great way to start & experiement. After neglecting my body for so long, not eating properly (not eating sometimes all day) this is exactly the boost my body needed. I have been taking the pack for 3 days and already feel more refreshed!
