It has been over 2 weeks ...

Sunday, March 20, 2011

It has been over two weeks since I last had a chance to blog. My family and I have been attending to my younger brother Bernie who was admitted to the Palmetto Health Heart Hospital for internal bleeding.

Bernie was being treated for a blood clot in his leg with a prescription blood thinner called "Cumodin". The medicine had thinned his blood to a dangerous level and he developed three very large blood blisters.

My Mother noticed that he was having difficulties breathing. He got worse and she called for an ambulance.

The blood blisters had burst. Bernie had started to bleed out and was drowning in his own blood. They got him to the hospital just in time. The doctors almost lost him in the Emergency Room, they found that he had two giant blood blisters in his chest and one under his stomach. The blisters pushed his heart to the other side of his chest.

They performed an emergency surgery to remove and cleanse all of the blood from his lungs.

He spent the first week in the Intensive Care Unit with a breathing tube, catheter and several tubes in his chest and intestine areas to drain the excess fluids.

The second week, after he was stable, he was moved to a private room. He is improving everyday and can now sit up in a reclining chair. His sense of humor came back one morning when the "always clean shaven" Bernie felt a two week old beard and wanted to shave.

Week three: Bernie is sitting up longer, eating solid food and watching his westerns "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza" on TV.

We celebrated his birthday in his hospital room last Tuesday, March 15th. When Mother and I came in with the cupcakes, he asked if we were cooking his birthday dinner "Corned Beef and Cabbage". She makes it for him and my youngest brother Cal who's birthday is on the 16th every year.

Talking about being thankful! God Is Good!! It is an absolute miracle that he even survived this. God is never late, Bernie has a strong will to live and God has shown his strong hand in protecting his life! Which brings to mind a popular spiritual "He's an On Time God".

Recently in the news, the tennis pro Serena Williams suffered a similar medical crisis. Doctors found several blood blisters in her lungs as the result of a prescribed blood thinner to dissolve a blood clot she developed in her leg after an injury. She had to have surgery to remove blood from her lungs too.

Please lift Bernie up in prayer for a full recovery.
Have a blessed Sunday!!
Love,
Vera
