31 Days - March 12: Eat Nuts!

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Today, Spark tells us to:

Go nuts!
cashews, hazelnuts,
pecans, peanuts,
pistachios all contain
monounsaturated fats
that lower you risk of
several diseases. Grab a
small handful 3-5 times
per week

I love nuts. Problem is, it's hard to stop at a handful. So I buy the 100 calorie packs of almonds, measure out my chopped walnuts when I eat my oatmeal, count out my shelled peanuts to take to work as a snack.. It's hard, but if I ever tried to just "grab a handful," I know I'd overeat. So my advice with the nuts, especially if you are as "nutty" for them as I am, is to measure, measure, measure!!

Sometimes I make my own trail mix with almonds, raisins, and dark chocolate m&m's. Comes to about 200 calories and really hits the spot. But now that I've given up chocolate for Lent, I'm going to have to forgo that little treat for about the next 40 days, unless, of course, I find something to replace the chocolate, but really, what can adequately replace chocolate????

Have a Sparky Day!!

Ever try carob to replace chocolate? I personally would rather have the real stuff in limit, but since it's a Lent thing...hmmm, should we really substitute? Sorry to say it --- it is a sacrifice. Good for you for doing that and remembering the sacrifice that was made for us!

I'm the same way at having a hard time stopping at just a handful! I do love nuts though!

I have been teaching myself to eat nuts... I always ate peanut butter, but no others. Now like almonds and have added pecans and also pine nuts which are not really nuts... but have the same consistantcy...

Better than I expected, but the texture still will take a little to grow on me.

Those packed almonds are probably high in sodium. I just buy the big bag of raw almonds from Costco. 10 almonds (count out before eating and walk away from the bag, lol) are about 69 calories . Since there is no salt (which seams to have the addictive quality to it) it is easy to manage.
