Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much.
—Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma

I bet a number of you have seen this quote somewhere. It is good advice and something that keeps sticking in my head. Some of you know that I spent slightly over a year as a vegetarian. I began eating animals again last January (I was detoxing from one vice, picked up another? eh, not that eating animals is a vice, I fully support survival of the fittest, although a little humanity thrown in would be great-- I will stop this tangent now).

Today, since it is a short work day, I only had to log in my breakfast and snacks. Initially I was going to do a string cheese as part of my snack, but then this quote popped into my brain and I was like, let me finish that celery and peanut butter. Mind you, I often take a calcium supplement because I am a woman of child-bearing years (uhh that is so weird, and I'm not even thinking about baby making) and also because I don't want to break anything down the line.

I really like the ideas (and science!) behind "mostly plants". Nature may be imperfect but we surely could all benefit from nourishing ourselves as naturally as possible. Eating primarily plants always makes me feel great. I always feel light on my feet, bright-eyed, fresh, energetic. I'm not sure exactly the *how* of it, just that it works every time.

And nobody ever got fat eating fruits and vegetables. For realz.

I love that quote! When I'm thinking about some sort of garbage I read wherever about whatever, I just think about that... I do eat food, mostly plants and not too much. I could use more leafy, colorful plants, but even on my worst days my diet's pretty planty...

Wow! that is some article. I don't agree with Ornish that science is converging towards a vegetarian diet. I think the two groups are polarized like never before. I don't know how old this article is, but recent studies have shown that an Ornish-type diet actually makes "heart disease risk factors" worse. Yes, it does reduce LDL, but now they are finding that there are several kinds of LDL, and the fluffy kind is good, and this is the kind that the Ornish plan reduces. It has been shown that a high-carb plan increases the bad kind of LDL.
I got sick eating a vegan diet, and gained weight on a vegetarian one. If you visit the paleo and low carb boards, you'll find others who were in the same predicament.
BTW, volume-wise, I still eat mostly plants, but I gotta hand it to you, your background sparkpage is even cooler than mine!
