Back pain caused by bulging discs

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

I haven't been able to do much hiking or exercising for the past 2 months because of a sore back.
All that shoveling I did in Jan and Feb has led to some bulging discs in my back causing pain and numbness down my leg to my foot.
After an appointment with an orthopedist, I was put on a week of Aleve, then a week of prednisone.
Since I wasn't getting relief an MRI was scheduled.
This showed bulging discs in my lower back.
My orthopedist then recommended an epidural cortisone shot to my lower spine.
All the Doctors who do this are extremely busy and are booked up well in advance.
Luckily there was a cancelation and I was able to be "shot" by one of the top pain
specialists, an Anesthesiologist.
Now I'm into the Physical Therapy part of my cure.
I hope to be fit and ready when the good weather comes.

Glad to hear you know what's wrong and are taking steps to "fix" it...it can be very frustrating to let your injuries heal when you are trying so hard to reach your weight loss goal...

Sorry to hear you are in pain Ben! I know how that feels as I suffered a slipped disc a few years ago. I was given physio exercises which I have done every day since and they have made a big difference to my life. I had always had a back problem with curvature of the spine and now I am pain free. Hope it works for you! Keep doing the physio exercises even when it gets better! That will strengthen your back. I found a Tens machine was good for relieving the pain. Good luck
