31 Days - March 3:Eat Fruit!!

Thursday, March 03, 2011

Today, Spark tells us to:

Enjoy 2-4 servings of fruit each day. Fruits are rich in nutrients, fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants, which all help prevent disease. One serving is equal to 1/2 cup.

Certainly can't disagree with this advice. But I'll add to it..look for the fruit that at any particular time is "in season," because that's the good stuff at any given time.. I LOVE navel oranges, but really, aren't they at their best right now? Similarly, is there anything like a nice fresh juicy apple? No, I say, but the September apple is MUCH tastier, fresh and juicy than the apple I buy today.. Likewise, blueberries and strawberries, though available all the time, are so much tastier when they are being harvested during their "seasons." Same with peaches, plums, nectarines..

There are some fruits that seem to be consistently good year round, bananas comes to mind instantly and that is one of my "go to" fruits because it is self contained, only needs to be peeled by hand, is filling and good. Similarly, grapes are usually pretty good no matter when, and they are an easy fruit to snack on. But adding variety not only spreads out the spectrum of nutrients each of these fruits has, it keeps you from getting bored.. And boredom is the arch-enemy of a good diet, I believe..

The other day at the market I bought mangos. Now, mangos are a genuine pain in the a$$ to peel and cut..that stupid pit right in the middle of the fruit is so hard to get around, no matter how good the knife you are using.. but oh it is so good, and so worth the work! Yesterday I brought some and had it with cottage cheese for my morning snack..it was so delish!! And there is something really satisfying and, oddly, motivating, about eating something that is different and yet so good for you..

Have a Sparky day!

I am with Joanne about the fruit over veggies most often . Weird I know. I think it's about convienience, very easy to buy frozen veggies ready to go. Love them sugared up in pies and preserves, but I think that negates benefits.

I think strawberries and blueberries are in season somewhere right now!! The price just dropped significantly...oh and raspberries too.

I am very spoiled. The fruit and veggie market in town specializes in pre washed and cut up produce. They sell a container of mango already sliced for less money than it costs to buy 2 mangoes. There is AT LEAST 1 1/2 to 2 mangoes in a container! They do the same thing for grapefruit, but for some reason it is very expensive. I buy carrots and melon this way too. it makes healthy snacking so easy.

    Oh I LOVE Mango Salsa...yum!
I have a hard time eating fruit...not sure why...but I choose broccoli over an apple any day.
That said, I have made frozen blueberries a staple. They are good over hot or cold cereal & in yogurt too!

Anyway, loved your blog. Keep up the healthy eating! =)

Not only is fruit better when it's in season, but it's cheaper then too! Right now, produce prices at our store are ridiculous (strawberries were $5 a pound last month!). My problem is that I'm all for convenience and most fruits take too much time to cut, peel, or whatever.

Good points about fruit in season. It is usually local and less of a carbon foot print. As for handy snacks some fruits as you say do come in there own environmentally friendly packaging.
