Grocery Store traitor

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

When I was sick last week, hubby bought the groceries. emoticon This was very nice of him. HOWEVER, he went to the new Fareway store instead of the Hy-Vee store I always go to.
http://www.hy-vee.com/ vs. http://fareway.com/

He is all excited about 1) how inexpensive it is & 2) how good their meat department is. He thinks we should switch to Fareway & shop there from now on. NO WAY!

I know where everything is at Hy-Vee. I know the employees there... (they will even grind chicken breasts for me so I can use that instead of ground beef). They have wonderful bakery, produce & health food departments. I am a fiercely loyal person & have no intention of going to Fareway.

Hubby wants me to give Fareway a chance & thinks I will like it. I won't. Am I being stubborn?? I know that Fareway is closer to our house & cheaper, but I don't want to go there.

Is anyone else in love with their grocery store?? emoticon

Interesting concept that most women (more than men) face all the time. I love my more "designer" grocery store, shop for the better deals they might have to get you in their doors....produce -good produce is so worth every penny I feel, and meats, seafood chicken....same. But if I need a fes things and Safeway is closer and I have club reward points and all those savings....Ill go there for my bread , milk, and if Im out of cheese or need margarine. I guess i am two timing, its pretty even....Ill go the more expensive route if Im really nutrician and quality mindful.....the old sayings come to mind... You are what you eat, as well as.... you get what you pay for!
nice to visit your page, I kind of fell into the grocery topic....from somewhere else.....

Well, of course there is no black and white answer here.
I usually try to be mindful of gas.
I have my favorite store too, and I shop for bargains/sales...shop from teh weekly flyer.
I would support the bargain box store as long as it does not interfere with your healthy diet.
Cheaper is a whole different issues from nutrition...
Food shopping first is about nutrition etc.
    Nutrition loyal.

I do have a favorite store, mine is close to my house (about a mile) same distance as the "bargain" grocery store. I stick to mine because it's a)smaller, b) I know my way around, c) better produce. I don't mind the big box bargain store, but I'm usually time crunched, and don't want to wander those long aisles and have go w/ substandard produce.

Now my boyfriend always shops at the big box bargain store, which is fine with me, he has more time and patience for that.

But I think if all things were equal (or if the big box store was close and had better produce) I'd probably shop the bargains!

Funny enough I'm in love with Fareway, lol. Although I do "cheat" on Fareway with HyVee. Both of those stores are the main ones I go to for groceries, I rarely go elsewhere.

Yup - I am! I go to Kroger, which I like and am familiar with. A Meijer is about the same distance away but it is HUGE, always crowded, doesn't always have the brand/varieties of things we like, but it is less expensive. Not a ton, but it is less. I go to Kroger faithfully!

Here ya go: Give it a try! See if the meat dept will do the same for you, and then go to both stores and compare prices on the things you buy all the time. You may be pleasantly surprised! And if not, then you have data (read: AMMO) to use in a discussion with hubby.

OK, Claudia. Here's what you do: Go to Fareway and see if they will give you some of their bags. You can tell them your daughter needs them for a school project or something. Then, go to Hy-Vee! Have the Hy-Vee cashier bag up your groceries in the Fareway bags. When you come home, you can say, "Hubby, you were RIGHT! That Fareway is AWESOME!" Then, just keep reusing the bags. Oh, but don't buy any Hy-Vee store brand items or he might catch on.

    emoticon OMG, I am hilarious.

Give it a try, you may like it. I pretty much go to the same store all the time, but there is one closer to where I live and if I only need a couple of things, I will go there. I don't know where everything is and it is frustrating sometimes, but if I would go more often I'm sure I would find my way around. Like you, I am a loyal customer and feel more comfortable with what I am familiar with.

I can understand your loyalty to your store but I have to agree...wouldn't hurt to give the other store a chance. If it saves you money and is closer to home. Give it a month or so and compare prices with Hy-Vee. It may be surprising how much you could actually save.
